A pergola is an open frame, so “roofing” one means adding a covering the posts and rafters were often not sized to carry. The right choice depends on how much weather you want to stop, how much light you want to keep, and what your existing frame can hold. Corrugated and multiwall polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is the material most homeowners reach for on an existing pergola because it is light enough to lift and screw down without extra structure, and it lets filtered daylight through. Corrugated polycarbonate panels are sold in standard widths and lengths at home centers: Palram SUNTUF and Tuftex PolyCarb corrugated sheets are about 26 inches wide, with SUNTUF sold in lengths such as 6, 8, 10, and 12 feet. A 12-foot corrugated polycarbonate sheet commonly runs in the range of roughly $50 to $80 at major retailers. Tuftex rates its PolyCarb panels for a surface temperature range of about -40°F to 270°F.

Multiwall polycarbonate uses a hollow, ribbed cross-section (twin-wall or triple-wall, commonly 6mm to 16mm) that adds stiffness and some insulation. Its open cell ends must be sealed, typically with a vented anti-dust tape and a U-profile, so condensation and debris do not collect inside the flutes. Two trade-offs to plan around: polycarbonate can amplify rain noise, and heat can build underneath because clear panels trap warmth like a greenhouse. Corrugated PVC

Corrugated PVC sheets look similar to polycarbonate and cost less upfront, which is why they show up on budget and temporary covers. The trade-off is durability: PVC panels generally have a shorter service life than polycarbonate and can become brittle sooner under UV exposure. Metal panels

Aluminum or steel panels give full shade and the longest life among the rigid options, and they shed snow and resist hail better than plastic. Standing-seam pergola kits are sold specifically to drop onto a frame. The trade-offs are no daylight through the roof and, with bare metal, more radiant heat unless the panel is coated or insulated. Metal is a strong pick where snow load, hail, or a fully shaded room-like feel matters more than natural light.

Adjustable louvered roofs

A louvered aluminum roof uses slats that tilt from open sky to fully closed, and many are motorized with app or remote control and integrated gutters for drainage. This is the most flexible option and among the longest lasting, often rated 25 years or more, but it is also the most expensive. Installer ranges for a roughly 12-by-16-foot louvered structure are frequently quoted around $13,000 to $17,000, compared with roughly $2,500 to $7,000 for a polycarbonate cover of similar size, according to patio-cover installers. Because a louvered roof is an engineered system, it is usually installed as its own structure or professionally retrofitted rather than added by a homeowner.

Will a pergola roof actually keep rain out?

It depends on the material and the detailing. Rigid panels (polycarbonate, PVC, metal) can shed rain well when they are sloped, overlapped, and sealed correctly. Shade cloth and many open-weave fabrics filter sun but are not reliable rain protection. Two details decide whether a rigid cover stays dry underneath: adequate slope so water runs off instead of pooling, and correct end and side laps so water cannot track back under the panels. Where the roof meets a house wall, flashing at that junction is what stops leaks, not sealant alone.

How to attach a roof to an existing pergola

These are the general steps for a rigid panel roof (polycarbonate, PVC, or metal corrugated) on a frame that is already standing. Always follow the panel manufacturer’s instructions and check local building codes, because permit and load requirements vary by jurisdiction.

  1. Confirm the frame can carry the load. A pergola built for shade may not be sized for a rigid roof plus snow. Check post, beam, and rafter sizing, and add rafters or purlins if spans are too wide for the panel you chose.
  2. Build in slope. Panels need to drain. Many polycarbonate manufacturers specify a minimum slope (Palram lists a 5-degree minimum for SUNTUF, roughly 1 inch of fall per foot). Create the fall by tapering or adding a sub-frame if the pergola is dead level.
  3. Add purlins at the specified spacing. Run horizontal purlins across the rafters so the panels have support at the intervals the manufacturer requires. Corrugated panels are typically fastened at the crown of the corrugation.
  4. Pre-drill oversized holes for thermal movement. Plastic panels expand and contract with temperature. Drill fixing holes larger than the screw shank so the panel can move, and use gasketed screws with sealing washers made for the panel. Do not overtighten.
  5. Seal multiwall ends. On multiwall polycarbonate, close the open flutes with vented anti-dust tape and edge profiles so condensation and debris cannot collect inside.
  6. Lap panels correctly. Overlap side and end joints per the instructions so water runs down the surface, not into the seam. Corrugated sheets usually overlap by a set number of corrugations.
  7. Flash the wall junction. If one edge meets the house, install flashing tucked under the siding or wall covering and over the top of the panels so water is directed onto the roof, not behind it.
