Best Roofers in Longview, TX: 2 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Best Roofers in Longview, TX: 2 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026, the two highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Longview, TX metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Longview Roofing LLC (69.0), Curtis-McKinley Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc (61.9). Each holds a certification we verified on the manufacturer’s own register, every rating was corroborated elsewhere, and placement on this page is not for sale.

The Roofing Brief scored 2 certified roofing contractors serving the Longview metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top two individually to confirm its record. Longview took 134 hail reports of an inch or more and 387 severe wind reports in ten years, and the certified pool in this metro is two companies. We are not going to pretend otherwise. A two-name list is not a picture of this market; it is a picture of which Longview-area firms happen to sit in one manufacturer’s programme. So this page does two things. It assesses the two certified firms honestly, including the fact that one of them is substantially a federal and commercial contractor rather than a residential reroofer. And it names the verifiable alternatives, by credential, below: the four firms holding the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas licence inside this metro, and the Owens Corning network members near it.

The conditions a Longview roof has to be specified for

The storm load here is heavy and under-appreciated. Across 2016 to 2025 Gregg, Harrison, Rusk and Upshur counties logged 165 hail reports, 134 of them at an inch or more and 22 at two inches or more, alongside 387 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports of which 142 reached 58 knots, and 50 tornado county-segments. The largest stone was 3.50 inches in northwest Upshur County on 11 April 2016. The strongest tornado was the EF3 of 13 April 2019 that entered southern Rusk County, and NWS Shreveport also surveyed an EF2 in Rusk County on 25 May 2015 running 19.45 miles and 600 yards wide. April is the peak month by a long way, with 190 reports against 95 in May.

The housing stock is old relative to that load, which is the combination that matters. Median year of construction is 1982 for the metro, 1980 in Gregg and Rusk counties, 1984 in Harrison, 1989 in Upshur, and 1978 in the city of Longview. A 1978 roof has been through four decades of April hail seasons and several coverings. Of the metro’s 108,174 occupied housing units, 32,060 are renter-occupied, 29.6 percent, but inside the city of Longview it is 14,946 of 33,009, 45.3 percent, so the oldest stock is also the most heavily tenanted.

There is no state licence to be absent from. RCAT states on its own licensing page that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation does not currently administer licensure for roofing contractors. Its voluntary licence requires the applicant to have been a principal in a Texas-domiciled roofing firm with a fixed location, to carry $300,000 combined single limit general liability for a residential licence or $500,000 for commercial, or post a $100,000 bond in either case, to hold workers’ compensation, and to pass examinations. Fees run $550 to $1,050 depending on class and membership, with a $250 annual renewal and eight continuing-education hours. Four firms inside this metro hold it, and neither of the two certified firms on this page is one of them.

The city regulates roofing less than you would expect. Longview’s Unified Development Code requires each contractor listed in its registration section, or regulated by the State of Texas, to register with Development Services before applying for any permits. But the registration form lists no roofing contractor category at all: the checkboxes are residential general contractor, combination general contractor, swimming pool, sign, and driveway and sidewalk. So a roofer has no category to register in. A residential reroof permit is a flat $105 on the 2025 to 2026 fee schedule, and the city moves to the 2021 International Building Code family on 1 July 2026 with the 2026 National Electrical Code. On the deductible, the offence that binds a contractor is Business and Commerce Code section 27.02, not Insurance Code chapter 707, and section 27.02 also requires a 12-point boldfaced notice on any contract of $1,000 or more expected to be paid from insurance proceeds.

1. Longview Roofing LLC — TRB Score 69.0

Longview Roofing LLC is based in Longview, TX, in business since 2016, led by Not established; the company’s own testimonials name Ryan Baumgardner and a Rodney, but no filing or registry record confirming an officer was obtained, Not accredited; A+ rating, with an empty review and complaint history, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

Score component Points Max
Certification tier 12 35
Adjusted rating 32.0 40

Metro proximity 10.0 10
Total 69.0 100

Independently corroborated:

  • Rated A+ though not accredited, recording the LLC as started on 29 August 2016 at 438 S High St, Longview, with an empty review and complaint history.. BBB business profile

What they actually do. Commercial roofing, residential roofing, custom sheet metal fabrication, gutters, minor carpentry.

Why it ranks here. The higher of the two certified firms here, at 4.8 across 65 reviews, and the only one of the two whose business is substantially residential, which is the central distinction on this page. It performs custom sheet metal fabrication in house, which in a metro that logged 22 hail reports of two inches or more in a decade means valley metal, flashings and drip edge can be made rather than bought. Its own site states that it is one of the few roofing contractors in the area that carries workers’ compensation, which is a meaningful claim in a state that does not require private employers to hold it, and worth asking it to evidence.

Best fit for: A residential replacement with custom metal detail work, from the more consumer-facing of the two certified firms.

What we would want clarified. Several gaps, and in a market with no licence they matter more. We could not establish a named officer or managing member: the testimonials on its own site mention two first-and-last names, but no registry, BBB or filing record confirming an officer’s identity was obtained. It is not BBB accredited, and its BBB file carries no reviews and no complaints at all, so there is no third-party record of its work in either direction. Its claim of over 50 years of experience is a claim about personnel rather than the registered entity, which BBB dates to 29 August 2016, and we could not verify it. It holds no RCAT licence and does not appear in the Owens Corning directory. Its base-tier manufacturer certification is self-reported, and we could not verify the 65 reviews or the rating. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (903) 238-8841, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

2. Curtis-McKinley Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc — TRB Score 61.9

Curtis-McKinley Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc is based in Longview, TX, in business since 1986, led by David McKinley, President; BBB also lists Anthony McKinley and Joseph Fuller as Vice Presidents, Not accredited; Not Rated, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

Score component Points Max
Certification tier 12 35
Adjusted rating 32.0 40
Review corpus depth 7.9 15
Metro proximity 10.0 10
Total 61.9 100

Independently corroborated:

  • An open file at 4515 Alpine Rd, Longview, not accredited and Not Rated, with David McKinley as President and Anthony McKinley and Joseph Fuller as Vice Presidents.. BBB business profile
  • 28 Department of Defense prime awards worth approximately $29.69 million since 2007, performed across 14 states.. USAspending federal award data

What they actually do. Commercial roofing systems, sheet metal fabrication, federal and institutional roofing work.

Why it ranks here. The oldest verifiable roofing business in the metro, incorporated November 1986 and still at the same Alpine Road address nearly forty years later, with three named officers. It is also the only firm on any page in this programme with a documented federal workload: 28 Department of Defense prime awards worth about $29.69 million since 2007, performed in 14 states. Winning and delivering federal roofing contracts repeatedly over eighteen years is a demanding form of third-party validation, because the bonding, prevailing-wage and inspection regime on that work is far stricter than anything a homeowner can impose.

Best fit for: Commercial, institutional and federal roofing, and large sheet metal work. Probably not an ordinary house.

What we would want clarified. Read this before you call, because the mismatch is real. The federal and commercial workload is a different business from residential storm reroofing, and we could not establish whether the company still performs residential reroofing at all. That also explains the very small consumer footprint: 8 reviews, the thinnest on any page in this programme. Its BBB file is open but Not Rated and not accredited, and we could not establish why the rating is absent rather than a letter grade. Its former domain, curtismckinleyroofing.com, returned no DNS record at all when we checked, so there is no current website to read. It holds no RCAT licence, and its base-tier manufacturer certification is self-reported. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (903) 757-7402, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

The verifiable alternatives this page cannot rank

Our ranking covers manufacturer-certified contractors, and in this metro that is two firms. These five are not certified in that programme and so are not scored, but each holds a credential we checked at source. We have not assessed their work and we are not recommending them; we are telling you they exist and what the evidence behind each one is, because a two-name list in a market this storm-exposed would be misleading on its own.

Company Verified credential
Gordy Roofing Inc. Founded 1965 and BBB accredited continuously since 24 November 1995 with an A+ rating, which is the longest unbroken third-party record in this market. Roof Care Inc Holds RCAT Commercial & Residential Roofing licence #03-0400, an RCAT member since 2018, with Ricardo Gamboa CRRL as principal, and is also on BBB’s accredited roofing contractors list for Longview. It does not appear in the Owens Corning directory within 50 miles.

What 3.5 inch hail does to a Longview roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 4 counties of the Longview, TX statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 165 hail reports, 387 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 50 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $7.5 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Longview in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
11 April 2016 3.5 in Thomas Upshur
9 April 2021 3.0 in Henderson Rusk
6 April 2018 2.75 in Crossroads Harrison
9 April 2021 2.75 in Henderson Rusk
11 April 2016 2.75 in Smith Upshur
11 February 2024 2.75 in Longview Gregg

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 11 April 2016 near Thomas, measured at 3.5 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 91 knots, about 105 mph, near Longview Eastside Ar on 5 August 2022. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 50 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF3 near Reklaw on 13 April 2019.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 5 August 2022 event near Longview Eastside Ar, reproduced verbatim:

A downburst with maximum winds estimated at 105 mph resulted in numerous downed trees near the intersection of Loop 281 and Highway 80 in East Longview. Five buildings sustained shingle damage at the Pinehurst Apartment Complex, with the most intense damage occurring just west of the apartment complex along Pat Drive and Highway 80. Approximately 15 trees were snapped and around 30 trees were uprooted at this location. Further downstream to the west, trees were uprooted and large branches broken across the Longview Heights area, with the damage ending at the Memory Park Cemetery. One person was injured when a tree fell onto their vehicle in the Longview Heights area.

That is what the specification has to anticipate here, written up by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in April (190), May (95), March (84). The worst years on record were 2023 (89), 2020 (76), 2017 (69). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Longview, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Longview sees enough damaging hail that a Class 4 impact-rated shingle is worth pricing, though not automatically worth buying. Get both quotes and weigh the premium against any insurance discount.

Why a metro with this much hail has almost no certified roofers

The mismatch is worth stating plainly: 134 damaging hail reports in a decade, 50 tornado segments, a 1978 median housing stock in the city, and a certified pool of two. That is not a statement about contractor quality in East Texas. It is a statement about which certification programmes have reached here, and the answer is that none of them really has.

Start with why. There is no state licence, so certification is wholly elective and the only things a programme can require are a fee, an examination and an insurance floor. The dominant manufacturer network in East Texas is Owens Corning rather than the one this page is built on, and it is thin inside the metro too: its own directory returns 14 members within 50 miles of Longview, of which only three are inside the four counties, at Hallsville, Gladewater and Marshall, all at the lower Preferred tier, and none inside the city of Longview itself. Both of the regional Platinum Preferred firms are near Tyler, at Lindale and Tyler respectively, about 40 miles away.

Tyler is the explanation for most of this, and it shows up in both networks the same way. Twelve Owens Corning members sit within 25 miles of Tyler, including both regional Platinum Preferred firms, and roughly ten RCAT licence holders cluster in the Tyler, Whitehouse, Lindale and Flint area. The density that a market this storm-exposed should support has settled 40 miles west, and Longview is served from there rather than from within.

The institutional gap is the other half. RCAT runs six regional chapters, covering Central Texas, Houston, Lubbock, North Texas, the Panhandle and a suspended Abilene chapter. None covers East Texas. There is no local meeting, no licensing cohort, no continuing-education venue within reasonable distance. In Amarillo the city links to its local chapter from its own roofing page and 14 of that chapter’s members hold the licence; here there is nothing for a contractor to join, so nobody joins.

What that means for you is that this page’s two-name list is a starting point and not a shortlist, and the verifiable alternatives below are at least as useful. Four firms inside this metro hold the RCAT licence, which is the only roofing credential that exists in Texas, and neither of the two certified firms on this page does. One firm, founded in 1965, has held BBB accreditation continuously since 24 November 1995, which is the longest third-party record in the market. Get quotes across both groups. And in a city whose own contractor registration form has no roofing category, the certificate of insurance and the $105 permit are the only mandatory checks, so use them.

The checks worth making in Longview

There is no state roofing licence in TX. Texas does not issue or require a state roofing contractor licence. There is no state exam, no state licence number to check, and no state board that can discipline a roofer.

The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) runs a voluntary Licensed Roofing Contractor program requiring two years of Texas experience, a fixed business address, a business and safety exam and a roofing exam at 70% or better, and at least $300,000 general liability insurance for residential work or a $100,000 surety bond.

That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.

Check here: RCAT licensed contractor lookup. Many Texas cities still require roofers to register with the municipality and pull a permit, so check with the city building department where the work will happen.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Longview rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Longview, TX pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 2 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 0 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.8. The top two were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. The findings are printed above whether they flatter the contractor or not, and nobody paid to appear.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Why a metro with this much hail has almost no certified roofers?

The mismatch is worth stating plainly: 134 damaging hail reports in a decade, 50 tornado segments, a 1978 median housing stock in the city, and a certified pool of two. That is not a statement about contractor quality in East Texas. It is a statement about which certification programmes have reached here, and the answer is that none of them really has.

Is Longview a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Longview?

Wind, by a wide margin. The Longview, TX statistical area logged 387 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 134 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
