Short answer: As of October 2026, the five highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Punta Gorda, FL metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Anthony C. Leonard Roofing (90.9), Galloway Roofing (83.8), A-1 American Roofing & Sheet Metal (70.2), Kirkey Roofing (63.4), First Service CGC (59.6). Every one holds a manufacturer certification that can be verified independently, every rating below has been corroborated against at least one source outside the certification registry, and no company paid to appear here.
The Roofing Brief scored 6 certified roofing contractors serving the Punta Gorda metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top five individually to confirm its record. Punta Gorda has taken the eye of a major hurricane twice in eighteen years: Charley in 2004 and Ian in 2022, each making its second Florida landfall at 125 knots right at the city. It is also one of the oldest places in the country, with a median age of 66 and mostly owner-occupied homes, so Florida’s roof-age insurance rules land on residents directly. Florida licenses roofers with an exam and a public register; six certified firms appear in the directory, and five are ranked, each holding a clean Florida certified roofing licence.
Why a Punta Gorda roof fails slowly rather than suddenly
Florida licenses roofing at state level under Chapter 489. A certified roofing contractor holds a CCC licence valid statewide, and s. 489.113(3) means a general or building contractor licence alone does not cover a reroof: the work must be done under a roofing licence or subcontracted to someone who holds one. The register at the Department of Business and Professional Regulation shows each licence’s status and any public complaint or discipline record, and every firm ranked here is on it with no public complaints listed.
The Homeowners’ Construction Recovery Fund pays up to $30,000 per claim against a roofing contractor for contracts signed from 1 July 2024, double the old limit. Florida’s roofing solicitation law bars a roofer from offering any rebate, gift or waiver of your deductible for an inspection or a claim, from paying for referrals, and from interpreting your policy or adjusting your claim. After a declared emergency such as Ian or Milton, you may cancel a roof contract signed within 180 days of the event within 10 days of signing or before work starts. Assignment of benefits under policies issued since 2023 is void.
The code rule that matters most here turns on age. Under s. 553.844(5), only the replaced portion of a roof built to the 2007 Florida Building Code or later has to meet current code. But 64 percent of Charlotte County’s housing predates 2000, so for most older roofs replacing a quarter or more still brings the whole section up to current code. Insurers may not refuse a roof under 15 years old on age alone, and must accept an inspection showing five years of life left on an older one. Charlotte County is outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone; the 8th Edition Florida Building Code is in force.
Between hurricanes the convective record is light: across 2016 to 2025 Charlotte County logged one hail report, 18 thunderstorm wind reports and 13 tornadoes. Milton, in October 2024, brought gusts of 70 to 80 mph and three tornadoes to the county, including an EF1 in El Jobean. Charlotte County’s median home was built in 1991, only 16.2 percent of its homes are rented, and 18,595 are held for seasonal use. My Safe Florida Home was taking applications for free wind inspections and matched grants of up to $10,000 when we checked.

- Accredited since 10 August 2018 with an A+ rating, business start 1990, two complaints in three years.. BBB business profile
What they actually do. Residential reroofing.
Why it ranks here. The leader on our scoring: President’s Club certification and a 4.9 across 389 reviews, from a third-generation family roofer in Englewood that lists Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte in its service area.
Best fit for: Homeowners who want a long-established family firm with the deepest review record in the market.
What we would want clarified. Contract with the LLC: the founder’s older company licence was not renewed by the 31 August 2026 deadline and shows as delinquent, while the business now trades under the LLC’s current licence. Its founding year is 1980 on its site and 1990 on BBB. It is based on the Sarasota County side of Englewood, about 18 miles from Punta Gorda. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (941) 415-6248, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
2. Galloway Roofing — TRB Score 83.8
Galloway Roofing is based in Englewood, FL, in business since 2012, led by David Galloway, managing member and licence qualifier, BBB accredited since 24 November 2020, A+ rating, two complaints in three years, and holds President’s Club standing on the GAF certification registry.

- Accredited since 24 November 2020 with an A+ rating, established January 2012, two complaints in three years, with additional locations in Fort Myers and Tampa.. BBB business profile
What they actually do. Residential roofing with in-house crews.
Why it ranks here. A family firm founded in 2012 and headquartered on Placida Road, on the Charlotte County side of Englewood, with President’s Club certification, a 4.7 across 377 reviews, and in-house crews rather than subcontractors by its own account.
Best fit for: Charlotte County homeowners who want a large firm based in the county.
What we would want clarified. It has expanded quickly, with offices now in Fort Myers, Tampa and Orlando, and its website gives inconsistent job counts. BBB shows two complaints in three years. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (941) 697-3737, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
3. A-1 American Roofing & Sheet Metal — TRB Score 70.2
A-1 American Roofing & Sheet Metal is based in Rotonda West, FL, in business since 2015, led by Joseph Capotosto, President and licence qualifier, BBB accredited since 21 April 2022, A+ rating, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

- Accredited since 21 April 2022 with an A+ rating; shingle, tile, metal, coatings and roof decks.. BBB business profile
What they actually do. Shingle, tile and metal roofing, coatings and sheet metal.
Why it ranks here. A family-owned roofer founded in 2015, with the date agreeing across its licence, BBB and site, a clean certified roofing licence, Master Elite certification and a perfect 5.0, serving Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties.
Best fit for: Tile and metal roofs, and sheet metal flashing work.
What we would want clarified. A perfect rating across only 12 reviews is a thin base. The directory places it in Rotonda West, but its licence and website give an Englewood address. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (941) 549-5999, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
4. Kirkey Roofing — TRB Score 63.4
Kirkey Roofing is based in Englewood, FL, in business since 1951, led by Craig Squier, President; Patricia and Sean Squier, licence qualifiers, BBB accredited since 10 October 2013, A+ rating, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

- Accredited since 10 October 2013 with an A+ rating, business start 1951; residential and light commercial roofing.. BBB business profile
- Lists Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, Rotonda West, Placida and Boca Grande among the communities served.. Company service area page
What they actually do. Residential and light commercial roofing.
Why it ranks here. The oldest firm in the pool by a long way: established in 1951, with BBB and the company agreeing, now run by the Squier family with two clean certified roofing licences, and a 4.8 across 263 reviews.
Best fit for: Homeowners who want a roofer that has worked this coast through every hurricane since the 1950s.
What we would want clarified. Its marketing centres on Sarasota County, with offices in Englewood and Lakewood Ranch; its Charlotte County coverage rests on its own service area page. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (941) 474-2113, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
5. First Service CGC — TRB Score 59.6

- Certified Roofing Contractor licence CCC1330957 since April 2016, plus two certified general contractor licences and a plumbing licence, none showing public complaints.. Florida DBPR licence register
- Not accredited, A+ rating, incorporated September 2011, no complaints closed in three years, filed under painting contractors.. BBB business profile
What they actually do. Roofing, painting, remodelling and restoration, with a condominium and HOA focus.
Why it ranks here. A veteran-owned general contractor in North Fort Myers holding a clean certified roofing licence alongside general contractor licences, with a 4.7 across 220 reviews and a roofing division that covers Charlotte County.
Best fit for: Condominium boards and HOAs managing multi-building reroofs.
What we would want clarified. It is a multi-trade firm, filed by BBB under painting, whose work leans to condominiums and associations rather than single houses. It is based in Lee County, not Charlotte. Its site says since 1994, against a 2011 incorporation. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

32 severe weather reports in a decade, and why that matters in Punta Gorda
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Punta Gorda, FL statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 1 hail report, 18 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 13 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $2.7 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The largest hail on record in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 August 2022 | 1.0 in | Charlotte Harbor | Charlotte |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 5 August 2022 near Charlotte Harbor, measured at 1.0 inches. One inch is the point at which hail starts bruising asphalt shingles, which is damage an adjuster can find even when a homeowner cannot.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 63 knots, about 73 mph, near Englewood on 21 December 2021. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
Tornadoes. 13 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF1 near Charlotte Harbor on 24 February 2016.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 17 January 2016 event near Harbor View, reproduced verbatim:
Charlotte County Emergency Management reported that they received an estimated 60 different calls from home and business owners about wind damage around western Charlotte County on the morning of the 17th. A total of 17 screen pool enclosures were damaged and 22 business had damage to the plastic covering of illuminated signs. Other reported damage included trees and branches blown down and minor damage to soffit and fascia. The emergency manager also noted that this was the most significant Pictures were also relayed from broadcast media showing wind damage to the roof of a block walled commercial building. The pictures showed significant sections of the shingles and sub-roofing material…
A roof in this metro is built against events like that one, as recorded by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in June (8), August (5), January (4). The worst years on record were 2017 (9), 2022 (9), 2016 (4). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Punta Gorda, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.
Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.
What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Punta Gorda. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.
Twice through the eyewall
On 13 August 2004 Hurricane Charley made landfall near Cayo Costa at about 130 knots, then an hour later its eye passed over Punta Gorda, with the eyewall striking Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, in the National Hurricane Center’s words, with devastating results. Charley’s strongest winds were packed within about six nautical miles of the centre. The Punta Gorda airport station failed after a 97 knot gust; NHC says much stronger winds would very likely have been recorded had it survived, and an unofficial reading at the county airport logged 139 knots. Charley killed ten people directly in the US, including a couple whose mobile home was destroyed in Charlotte County.
Eighteen years later Hurricane Ian did it again. After a 130 knot landfall on Cayo Costa on 28 September 2022, the centre of Ian’s large eye made a second landfall near Punta Gorda at an estimated 125 knots. The Punta Gorda station reported a 117 knot gust before it, too, stopped reporting. Ian destroyed at least 200 homes in Charlotte County and caused an estimated $112.9 billion in US damage, the costliest hurricane in Florida’s history. Milton followed in 2024 with gusts near 80 mph.
Newer homes were not immune. A Florida Building Commission research report reproduces a FEMA Ian photograph of a 2021-built Punta Gorda home with severe water intrusion through its sliding doors, at an estimated wind speed of 130 mph against a design wind speed of 151 mph: a modern-code home leaking below its design wind.
The housing stock makes the rules matter. Charlotte County’s median resident is 59.9, Punta Gorda’s 66.3; most homes are owner-occupied; and nearly two-thirds predate 2000. Owners here deal with the insurer directly over roof age, and for most pre-2007 roofs the 25 percent rule turns a large repair into a full code-compliant section.
The practical checks are the same ones Florida writes into law. Confirm the roofing licence and its public record on the state register. Ask what wind rating and underlayment the quote specifies, and whether the deck seams will be sealed. Do not accept any offer to cover the deductible, and remember the ten-day cancellation right after a declared storm.

Before you sign anything in Punta Gorda
Licensing is required in FL. Florida requires a roofing contractor licence to install, repair, or replace any roofing system. A Certified Roofing Contractor licence is issued by the state and valid statewide; a Registered Roofing Contractor licence is issued locally and valid only in the issuing county or municipality.
A general contractor licence does not cover roofing in Florida. The licence must specifically read Certified Roofing Contractor or Registered Roofing Contractor.
Check here: Florida DBPR licence search. The DBPR record shows status, expiry and full disciplinary history. Anything other than Current, Active means the contractor cannot legally roof in Florida.
Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.
The Punta Gorda market behind this ranking
6 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Punta Gorda, FL statistical area, of which 2 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 1,341 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.783. The statistical area had a 2024 population of 212,122, a change of 13.54% against the 2020 census base, per the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates.

How these Punta Gorda rankings were produced
Every contractor in the Punta Gorda, FL pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 6 certified contractors, of whom 2 hold President’s Club standing and 1 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.783. The top five were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Where that research turned up something awkward it is on the page, and no placement was paid for.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Last updated: October 2026. Scoring run: 2026-10-05. Corrections go to the editor and are actioned on verification.

Twice through the eyewall?
On 13 August 2004 Hurricane Charley made landfall near Cayo Costa at about 130 knots, then an hour later its eye passed over Punta Gorda, with the eyewall striking Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, in the National Hurricane Center’s words, with devastating results. Charley killed ten people directly in the US, including a couple whose mobile home was destroyed in Charlotte County.
Is Punta Gorda a hard market to find a good roofer in?
Punta Gorda has taken the eye of a major hurricane twice in eighteen years: Charley in 2004 and Ian in 2022, each making its second Florida landfall at 125 knots right at the city. It is also one of the oldest places in the country, with a median age of 66 and mostly owner-occupied homes, so Florida’s roof-age insurance rules land on residents directly. Florida licenses roofers with an exam and a public register; six certified firms appear in the directory, and five are ranked, each holding a clean Florida certified roofing licence.
Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Punta Gorda?
Wind, by a wide margin. The Punta Gorda, FL statistical area logged 18 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 1 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
