Short answer: As of September 2026, the five highest-scoring roofing contractors in the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Anthony Leonard Roofing, trading as Anthony C. Leonard Enterprises (90.3), Roofing by Curry (88.7), Mark Kaufman Roofing (87.5), Kingdom Roofing, registered as Kingdom Roofing Services, Inc. (86.4), SonShine Roofing (85.3). Each holds a certification we verified on the manufacturer’s own register, every rating was corroborated elsewhere, and placement on this page is not for sale.
The Roofing Brief scored 16 certified roofing contractors serving the North Port metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top five individually to confirm its record. Sarasota and Manatee counties have one of the deepest certified pools of any metro their size in the programme: sixteen certified contractors, of whom nine hold GAF’s top President’s Club tier. That depth means the bar for a top-five place here is genuinely high. Florida is also the one state where the licence question has two answers. A Certified Roofing Contractor licence is issued by the state and valid everywhere; a Registered Roofing Contractor licence is also state-issued but valid only in the jurisdictions where the contractor met local competency requirements. And because Florida licences are held by a named individual who qualifies the company, the licence can be current while the person named on the sign is no longer the qualifier. We checked that individually below.

Wind, terrain and the North Port housing stock
Hail is almost irrelevant here and hurricanes are everything. The decade holds seven hail reports for Sarasota and Manatee counties, none larger than an inch, against 39 severe wind reports and 19 tornadoes. What the NOAA file does not capture is the two landfalls that defined the market: Hurricane Ian in September 2022, after which Sarasota County alone counted roughly $135 million in damage and the Army Corps installed emergency blue roofs across the region, and Hurricane Milton, which came ashore at Siesta Key as a Category 3 on 9 October 2024 and left more than $350 million in property damage in Manatee County.
That exposure is written into what a legal re-roof looks like. Most of the metro lies in Florida’s wind-borne debris region, so roofing products must carry a Florida Product Approval rated for the wind loads at your address, and state law requires a replacement roof on a site-built home to include hurricane mitigation measures: improved roof-deck attachment and a secondary water barrier, commonly called a sealed deck. That barrier is what keeps water out of the house once shingles or tiles are stripped away by wind, and it is the single most valuable part of the job.
The 25 percent rule decides whether a repair becomes a replacement. If more than a quarter of the roof area is repaired or replaced within any twelve-month period, the whole roofing system generally has to be brought up to current code, unless the roof was built to a code edition from 1 March 2009 or later and the permit for it was properly closed out. That exception is why the closed permit on your existing roof is worth finding before you accept a quote that promises a partial repair.
Permits and licences are not interchangeable in Florida. A full re-roof is permitted work in every jurisdiction here, pulled through Sarasota County, Manatee County, North Port, Venice or Bradenton depending on the address, and a general contractor licence does not cover roofing: the credential must read Certified Roofing Contractor, which is valid statewide, or Registered Roofing Contractor, which is valid only where it was issued. Check it on the state DBPR licence search, which also shows expiry and disciplinary history.

What they actually do. Shingle, tile, metal, flat and mobile home roofing, waterproof coatings, gutters, soffit and fascia across Sarasota, Charlotte, Manatee and Lee counties.
Services we could verify: slate and tile, metal roofing, flat and low-slope roofing, gutters.
Why it ranks here. Forty-six years trading with a Current and Active state Certified licence verified directly on the DBPR record. Mobile and manufactured home roofing is a genuine specialism in this stretch of the Gulf Coast and most certified contractors will not touch it.
Best fit for: Manufactured and mobile homes, and south Sarasota and Charlotte County properties.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (941) 415-6248, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

What they actually do. Tile, shingle, metal and flat roof installation, residential and commercial.
Services we could verify: slate and tile, metal roofing, flat and low-slope roofing, commercial roofing.
Why it ranks here. 1,301 registry reviews at 4.9 is the deepest evidence base in the entire batch and one of the deepest in the programme. State Certified rather than county Registered, so the licence is valid across Florida, and 24 years of unbroken A+ accreditation.
Best fit for: Homeowners who want the largest verifiable track record in the Sarasota market, and tile roofs.

What they actually do. Residential and commercial new construction, reroofing and repair across shingle, tile and flat systems.
Services we could verify: roof replacement, roof repair, slate and tile, flat and low-slope roofing, commercial roofing.
Why it ranks here. The only contractor based in North Port itself, one mile from the metro centre, and 895 registry reviews. Worth understanding how the licence actually sits: Mark Kaufman’s own licence lapsed in 2020, and the company now operates under a different named qualifier. That is entirely legal and common when a founder steps back, but it means the person whose name is on the truck is not the person whose licence the work is performed under.
Best fit for: North Port and Wellen Park homeowners wanting a contractor based in the city.
What we would want clarified. BBB reviews include disputes over warranty claims and continuing water intrusion after work. Ask for the current qualifier’s licence number in writing, and get warranty terms and the claims process spelled out in the contract. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing across Sarasota and Charlotte counties.
Services we could verify: commercial roofing.
Why it ranks here. 429 registry reviews at 4.8 with President’s Club certification and GuildQuality participation, based in Venice between North Port and Sarasota.
Best fit for: Venice, Nokomis and south Sarasota County homeowners.
What we would want clarified. BBB accreditation only since May 2024 despite nine years trading, so the formal record is short. The legal entity is Kingdom Roofing Services, Inc., which is the name to search on the Florida DBPR record. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

What they actually do. Roof repair, replacement and scheduled maintenance across Sarasota and Charlotte counties.
Services we could verify: roof repair, roof replacement, inspections and maintenance.
Why it ranks here. Twenty-five years of unbroken accreditation and a named founder still identified with the business. Scheduled maintenance as a distinct service line is unusual and matters in Florida, where insurers increasingly demand documented roof condition.
Best fit for: Homeowners who want a maintenance relationship rather than only a replacement, and insurance-driven roof condition reports.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (941) 866-4320, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

Roof replacement and repair in North Port, FL
Short answer: In North Port, start with Anthony Leonard Roofing for manufactured and mobile homes, Roofing by Curry for tile roofs and the deepest review record, Mark Kaufman Roofing, the only ranked firm based in North Port, Kingdom Roofing for Venice and Nokomis, and SonShine Roofing for scheduled maintenance. The rule that matters most: Florida’s 25 percent rule, which can pull a whole roof up to current code after a large repair.
Hail is almost irrelevant in Sarasota and Manatee counties and hurricanes are everything. The decade holds seven hail reports, none larger than an inch, against 39 severe wind reports and 19 tornadoes.
Most of the metro lies in Florida’s wind-borne debris region, so roofing products must carry a Florida Product Approval rated for the wind loads at your address, and a replacement roof on a site-built home must include improved roof-deck attachment and a secondary water barrier, commonly called a sealed deck. The 25 percent rule decides whether a repair becomes a replacement: no more than 25 percent of a roof or roof section may be repaired, replaced or recovered in any 12-month period unless the entire roof or section is brought up to current code. If the existing roof was built under the 2007 Florida Building Code or later, only the portion being worked on must meet current code.
A full re-roof is permitted work in every jurisdiction here, pulled through Sarasota County, Manatee County, North Port, Venice or Bradenton depending on the address. A general contractor licence does not cover roofing: the credential must read Certified Roofing Contractor, valid statewide, or Registered Roofing Contractor, valid only where it was issued. Because a Florida licence is held by a named individual who qualifies the company, it can be current while the person named on the sign is no longer the qualifier, so check the qualifier’s own certificate on the DBPR search. On claims, Fla. Stat. 626.9744(2) requires reasonable repair or replacement of adjoining items when replacements do not match, unless the policy provides otherwise.
Anthony Leonard Roofing in Englewood, trading since 1980 with a Current and Active Certified licence, covers shingle, tile, metal, flat and mobile home roofing, coatings and gutters. Roofing by Curry in Sarasota has 1,301 GAF reviews at 4.9 and installs tile, shingle, metal and flat roofs. Mark Kaufman Roofing, the only ranked firm based in North Port, does reroofing and repair across shingle, tile and flat systems under a qualifier other than its founder, and BBB reviews include warranty disputes. Kingdom Roofing in Venice covers residential and commercial roofing, and SonShine Roofing offers repair, replacement and scheduled maintenance across Sarasota and Charlotte counties.

The 39 wind reports that shape a North Port roof
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 2 counties of the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 7 hail reports, 39 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 19 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $15.5 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on North Port in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 June 2022 | 1.0 in | Parrish | Manatee |
| 15 October 2022 | 1.0 in | Lakewood Ranch | Manatee |
| 29 March 2016 | 1.0 in | Englewood | Sarasota |
| 31 May 2022 | 1.0 in | Matoaka | Manatee |
| 2 October 2016 | 0.88 in | Bee Ridge | Sarasota |
| 11 July 2017 | 0.88 in | Manasota Gardens | Sarasota |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 15 June 2022 near Parrish, measured at 1.0 inches. One inch is the point at which hail starts bruising asphalt shingles, which is damage an adjuster can find even when a homeowner cannot.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 65 knots, about 75 mph, near Belspur on 9 January 2024. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
Tornadoes. 19 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Pine Shrs on 17 January 2016.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 9 January 2024 event near Belspur, reproduced verbatim:
Several communities just north of Fruitville Road in the Sarasota area experienced a significant straight-line wind event with maximum estimated winds around 75 mph. The swath of damage, with a maximum width of around 370 yards, began near the intersection of Richardson Road and Fox Creek Drive and extended northeast for just under 1.5 miles before ending just northeast of the intersection of Racimo Drive and Duke Drive. The primary damage was to trees, but several structures towards the end of the path received mostly minor damage, mainly to siding.
That is what the specification has to anticipate here, written up by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in August (14), July (10), January (8). The worst years on record were 2016 (13), 2022 (11), 2017 (10). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in North Port, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.
Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.
What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in North Port. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.
How to check a North Port roofer in ten minutes
Licensing is required in FL. Florida requires anyone contracting for roofing work to hold a state roofing licence. A Certified Roofing Contractor licence is issued by the state and valid statewide; a Registered Roofing Contractor licence is also issued by the state, but only after the contractor meets a local jurisdiction’s competency requirements, and it is valid only in those jurisdictions. Narrow exemptions cover owners working on their own homes and casual work under $2,500 by someone who does not advertise as a contractor.
A general, building or residential contractor licence alone does not let a firm take on a reroof: it must subcontract the roofing unless it also holds a roofing licence, the only exception being shingles or shakes on a new building of its own construction. Since 2026, Fla. Stat. 553.79(1)(g) lets the owner of a single-family home, or the owner’s contractor, skip a building permit for work valued under $7,500 on written request, except in flood hazard areas and for structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical or gas work; it does not change who must be licensed.
Check here: Florida DBPR licence search. The state’s licence record shows status, expiry and public complaints and discipline, but not every complaint, so ask the local building department too. The licence must show an Active status; a probation or other disciplinary notation is a warning sign to check the complaint record, while Inactive, Delinquent, Suspended, Revoked or Null and Void means the holder cannot contract, and a Registered contractor may work only in its registered jurisdictions. A company’s business record can show Current without being a licence, so check the qualifier’s own roofing certificate or registration.
For what a full replacement costs across Florida, including state labor rates and permit rules, see our Florida roof replacement cost guide.
Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.
The shape of the North Port contractor market
16 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL statistical area, of which 9 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 5,094 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.844. The statistical area had a 2024 population of 934,956, a change of 12.14% against the 2020 census base, per the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates.
How these North Port rankings were produced
Every contractor in the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 16 certified contractors, of whom 9 hold President’s Club standing and 4 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.844. The top five were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. The findings are printed above whether they flatter the contractor or not, and nobody paid to appear.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Last updated: September 2026. Scoring run: 2026-09-18. Corrections go to the editor and are actioned on verification.
Questions North Port homeowners ask
Who is the best roofer in North Port, FL?
Anthony Leonard Roofing, trading as Anthony C. Leonard Enterprises of Englewood, FL scores highest in the North Port metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score, at 90.3 out of 100 as of September 2026. It holds President’s Club certification with a 4.9 rating across 364 reviews. Highest-scoring is not the same as best fit for your specific job, and the four companies behind it score within 5.0 points.
What is the 25% rule for roofing in Florida?
Section 706.1.1 of the Florida Building Code, Existing Building says no more than 25 percent of a roof or roof section may be repaired, replaced or recovered in any 12-month period unless the entire roof or roof section is brought up to current code. Since 2022, Fla. Stat. 553.844(5) says that if the existing roof was built, repaired or replaced under the 2007 Florida Building Code or later, only the portion being worked on must meet current code. Local governments may not amend that exception by ordinance.
Who does roof repair in North Port?
Mark Kaufman Roofing, the only ranked firm based in North Port, does reroofing and repair across shingle, tile and flat systems; ask for the current qualifier’s licence number and the warranty terms in writing. SonShine Roofing offers roof repair, replacement and scheduled maintenance across Sarasota and Charlotte counties.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in North Port?
Yes. A full re-roof is permitted work in every jurisdiction in the metro, pulled through Sarasota County, Manatee County, North Port, Venice or Bradenton depending on the address. The closed permit on your existing roof is also worth finding before you accept a quote for a partial repair.
How do I check a North Port roofer’s Florida licence?
Search the Florida DBPR licence record, which shows status, expiry and disciplinary history, and check the qualifier’s own roofing certificate, since a company’s business record can show Current without being a licence. A licence can be current while the person named on the sign is no longer the qualifier.
How many certified roofing contractors serve North Port?
16 contractors on the GAF certification registry serve the principal cities of the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL statistical area as of September 2026, of which 9 hold President’s Club status.
How much damaging hail does North Port get?
The North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL statistical area recorded 4 hail reports of 1 inch or larger and 0 of 2 inches or larger between 2016 and 2025 in the NOAA Storm Events Database. The largest hailstone reported measured 1.0 inches.
Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?
No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on the top five.
What was the worst hailstorm in North Port in the last ten years?
The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 1.0 inches, reported near Parrish on 15 June 2022. One inch is the point at which hail starts bruising asphalt shingles, which is damage an adjuster can find even when a homeowner cannot. Across the decade the metro recorded 7 hail reports. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $15.5 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.
When is the worst time of year for roof damage in North Port?
Severe-weather reports in the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL statistical area cluster in August, July, January, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. If the work can wait, booking outside that window usually buys you shorter lead times and more of the contractor’s attention.
Do roofers need a licence in FL?
Florida requires anyone contracting for roofing work to hold a state roofing licence. A Certified Roofing Contractor licence is issued by the state and valid statewide; a Registered Roofing Contractor licence is also issued by the state, but only after the contractor meets a local jurisdiction’s competency requirements, and it is valid only in those jurisdictions. Narrow exemptions cover owners working on their own homes and casual work under $2,500 by someone who does not advertise as a contractor. What should I check before hiring a roofer in North Port?
The state’s licence record shows status, expiry and public complaints and discipline, but not every complaint, so ask the local building department too. The licence must show an Active status; a probation or other disciplinary notation is a warning sign to check the complaint record, while Inactive, Delinquent, Suspended, Revoked or Null and Void means the holder cannot contract, and a Registered contractor may work only in its registered jurisdictions. A company’s business record can show Current without being a licence, so check the qualifier’s own roofing certificate or registration.
Is North Port a hard market to find a good roofer in?
Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in North Port?
Wind, by a wide margin. The North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL statistical area logged 39 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 4 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
