Best Roofers in Lexington Park, MD: 5 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026, the five highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Lexington Park, MD metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are St Mary’s Roofing and Home Improvement (77.3), Summit Exteriors (69.0), Simple Solutions Contracting (67.2), G.H. Clark Contractors (66.7), NewBrook Home Improvement (64.9). Every one holds a manufacturer certification that can be verified independently, every rating below has been corroborated against at least one source outside the certification registry, and no company paid to appear here.

The Roofing Brief scored 10 certified roofing contractors serving the Lexington Park metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top five individually to confirm its record. Lexington Park and Calvert County sit on a peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent and Potomac rivers, and their roof damage comes off the water: straight-line wind, tropical-storm tornadoes and, in 2025, a waterspout that came ashore and stripped shingles at Breton Bay. Maryland licenses home improvement contractors, roofers included, with an exam and a Guaranty Fund. Ten certified firms appear in the directory; the top five all hold active Maryland licences and are ranked, two based in St Mary’s County and three in Prince Frederick.

Hail, codes and what they cost a Lexington Park homeowner

Maryland issues no separate roofing licence; residential roofing falls under the Maryland Home Improvement Commission licence. Under Business Regulation 8-601 no one may act or offer to act as a contractor without one, and a first conviction carries a fine of up to $1,000 and six months, rising to $5,000 and two years. Applicants pass an exam and, since 1 June 2024, must carry at least $500,000 of liability insurance. The Commission’s public lookup shows active licensees only; disciplinary history has to be requested from the Commission.

The Guaranty Fund pays up to $30,000 to one homeowner for the acts or omissions of one licensed contractor, never more than the homeowner paid, and up to $250,000 against one contractor in total; it does not cover unlicensed contractors, and a claim must be made within three years. Maryland also caps deposits: a contractor may take no payment before the contract is signed and no more than one-third of the price as a deposit. The contract must show the contractor’s licence number, start and completion dates and price. Paying or promising to cover your insurance deductible is a fraudulent insurance act under Insurance 27-407.2.

Permit rules are county by county. Calvert County requires a building permit for roof construction or any replacement of sheathing, but a shingle-only replacement inside the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, within 1,000 feet of tidal water, needs none. Maryland adopted the 2021 International Residential Code statewide from May 2023, though Calvert’s own code page still lists the 2018 editions. We could not reach St Mary’s County’s permit pages, so ask the roofer and the county before work starts.

Across 2016 to 2025 Calvert and St Mary’s counties logged 254 thunderstorm wind reports, 41 hail reports, the largest three inches near Chesapeake Beach in May 2022, and eight tornadoes, all EF0 or EF1, with $7.5 million of recorded damage. Coastal flooding is the most frequent hazard on the St Mary’s zone record, with 62 events. Housing is young, with a median year built of 1990 in Calvert and 1992 in St Mary’s, and federal employment, much of it tied to the naval air station, accounts for 21.3 percent of St Mary’s County’s jobs.

Best fit for: St Mary’s County homeowners who want the closest highly certified roofer.

What we would want clarified. It has grown to three offices, in Hollywood, Hagerstown and Chestertown, so confirm the Hollywood office will run your job. Its 2010 start date rests on BBB alone. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Best fit for: North St Mary’s and Charles County homeowners after storm damage.

What we would want clarified. It has traded only since 2020 and is not BBB accredited. It markets insurance-claim help; Maryland treats any offer to cover your deductible as insurance fraud, so keep the claim in your own hands. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Best fit for: Calvert County homeowners who want a deep local review record.

What we would want clarified. It is based in Calvert County, about 22 miles from Lexington Park across the Patuxent. An unrelated Simple Solutions Home Improvement in Glen Burnie also appears on the state register, so check the licence number. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

What they actually do. Shingle, flat and metal roofing, siding, windows, doors, gutters, decks and porches.

Why it ranks here. A family exterior contractor in Prince Frederick, trading since about 1990, with roofing leading its product list, a showroom on Main Street, and a 4.9 across 218 reviews.

Best fit for: Homeowners who want a long-established family firm with a showroom.

What we would want clarified. Its website gives inconsistent years of service, and its licence register address differs from its BBB address on the same street. It is not BBB accredited, and it is based in Calvert County, about 22 miles from Lexington Park. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Why it ranks here. A family-owned, roofing-led contractor in Prince Frederick, BBB accredited since 2016 with no complaints, a 4.9 across 122 reviews, and a published service area naming Lusby, Solomons and Leonardtown.

Best fit for: Southern Calvert and Solomons homeowners.

What we would want clarified. Its founding year is 2014 on BBB and 2016 on its own site, and its licence is registered at a residential address in Chesapeake Beach rather than its office. It is based in Calvert County. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

The 37 hail reports behind a Lexington Park roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 2 counties of the Lexington Park, MD statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 41 hail reports, 254 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 8 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $7.5 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Lexington Park in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
16 May 2022 3.0 in Breezy Pt Calvert
16 May 2022 2.25 in Huntingtown Calvert
2 May 2016 1.75 in Chaneyville Calvert
6 April 2023 1.75 in Oaks St. Mary’S
6 April 2023 1.75 in Leonardtown St. Mary’S
17 June 2019 1.75 in Beauvue St. Mary’S

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 16 May 2022 near Breezy Pt, measured at 3.0 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 78 knots, about 90 mph, near Clements on 21 April 2021. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 8 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF1 near Breezy Pt on 4 August 2020.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 21 April 2021 event near Clements, reproduced verbatim:

On April 22, 2021, a team from NOAA/NWS Baltimore/Washington Weather Forecast Office surveyed storm damage from storms that occurred near the town of Clements in St. Mary’s County MD. The team found scattered-to-numerous instances of tree and structural damage over a path of several miles. Hardwood trees were uprooted, with several snapped at the trunk’s base. A metal roof was partially torn from a barn and blown downwind approximately 550 feet from the barn structure. Additionally, several well-seasoned farm outbuildings were completely demolished. All damage and debris generally fell linearly west-to-east, approximately close to the storm’s heading. Doppler Weather Radar images from both…

A roof in this metro is built against events like that one, as recorded by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in July (87), June (65), May (41). The worst years on record were 2019 (53), 2022 (42), 2025 (37). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Lexington Park, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Lexington Park. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

Wind off the water

One storm accounts for two-thirds of the decade’s recorded damage. On 29 July 2023 a 70-knot thunderstorm wind tore through Charlotte Hall, Golden Beach and Mechanicsville, and NWS recorded hundreds of trees down, many onto houses and cars, logged at $5 million.

Tropical storms bring tornadoes to the shoreline. On 4 August 2020 Tropical Storm Isaias spawned an EF1 that came ashore at Plum Point and reached about 90 mph near Breezy Point, dropping a large tree onto a house on Shore Drive and tearing siding from homes, plus an EF0 at Solomons and tornadoes near Scotland and Tall Timbers. Patuxent River Naval Air Station measured a 58 mph gust.

On 1 July 2025 an EF1 formed along Breton Bay southwest of Leonardtown, became a waterspout over the coves and came back ashore, peaking at an estimated 100 mph on Paw Paw Point. The NWS survey found shingles removed from a roof deck and windows broken, and boats flipped off raised docks. All eight tornadoes in the two counties over the decade were EF0 or EF1, and several were tied to the water.

Winter storms count too. The nor’easter of 2 March 2018 brought a 69 mph gust at Patuxent River, blew shingles and siding off multiple homes near California, and generated about 1,000 wind-related 911 calls in Calvert. And on 16 May 2022 a supercell dropped three-inch hail near Chesapeake Beach that punctured siding and windows.

For a waterfront owner, the Critical Area rule cuts both ways. A shingle-only job within 1,000 feet of tidal water needs no permit in Calvert, so no inspector looks at it; a job that replaces wind-damaged sheathing does need one. Ask the roofer which applies to yours, check the licence number on the Commission’s lookup, and keep the deposit to the one-third the law allows.

Before you sign anything in Lexington Park

Licensing is required in MD. Maryland requires a Maryland Home Improvement Commission licence for any contractor performing roofing or other home improvement work on a residential property. Maryland issues no standalone roofing licence; the MHIC Home Improvement licence is the required credential statewide.

Applicants must document at least two years of home improvement, construction or related education experience, pass a licensing exam, carry at least $50,000 liability insurance at application and renewal, and demonstrate financial solvency through a full credit report and net worth review.

Check here: MHIC Home Improvement Public Query. The MHIC public query tool is free and confirms active status in real time by contractor name, licence number or location. Maryland also runs a Guaranty Fund that can reimburse homeowners for losses caused by a licensed contractor, so hiring unlicensed forfeits that protection.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Lexington Park rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Lexington Park, MD pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 10 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 2 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.84. The top five were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Where that research turned up something awkward it is on the page, and no placement was paid for.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Is Lexington Park a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Lexington Park and Calvert County sit on a peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent and Potomac rivers, and their roof damage comes off the water: straight-line wind, tropical-storm tornadoes and, in 2025, a waterspout that came ashore and stripped shingles at Breton Bay. Maryland licenses home improvement contractors, roofers included, with an exam and a Guaranty Fund. Ten certified firms appear in the directory; the top five all hold active Maryland licences and are ranked, two based in St Mary’s County and three in Prince Frederick.

Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Lexington Park?

Wind, by a wide margin. The Lexington Park, MD statistical area logged 254 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 37 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
