Short answer: As of October 2026, the two highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Battle Creek, MI metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Roach Home Improvement (81.2), Blue Line Remodeling & Construction (69.8). Each is certified by a manufacturer whose register we checked by hand, each rating has been tested against a source outside that register, and nobody bought a place on this page.
The Roofing Brief scored 2 certified roofing contractors serving the Battle Creek metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top two individually to confirm its record. Battle Creek’s costliest roof weather is not hail, of which Calhoun County logged just six reports in a decade, but winter windstorms: the March 2017 gale that left a million Michiganders without power and roofs across the county damaged carries $10 million on its own. They fall on some of the oldest housing in Michigan, with a median home from 1956 inside the city. Michigan licenses roofers by exam. Five certified firms appear in the directory; three are excluded, one for a lapsed licence and two that publish no Calhoun County coverage, and two are ranked.
Quick picks for Battle Creek:
- Roach Home Improvement: best overall (TRB Score 81.2). Verified services: roof replacement, roof repair, metal roofing, siding, windows.
- Blue Line Remodeling & Construction: best for reroof plus remodelling (TRB Score 69.8). Verified services: roof replacement, roof repair, storm damage work, siding, windows.
The conditions a Battle Creek roof has to be specified for
Michigan licenses residential contractors through LARA: any job of $600 or more needs a residential builder or maintenance and alteration licence, and roofing is one of the specific trades on a maintenance and alteration licence. Applicants must pass an exam after 60 hours of pre-licence courses, a company is licensed through a qualifying officer who holds an individual licence, and each additional office needs its own branch licence. Unlicensed work is a misdemeanour with fines of $5,000 to $25,000, and an unlicensed contractor cannot sue you to collect.
Battle Creek also requires contractors to register their state licence with the city’s inspection division, with proof of liability insurance and a $15 fee. A residential reroof permit is a flat $103.50, starting without one costs $150 more, and a permit lapses if work does not start within six months. The city still enforces the 2015 Michigan Residential Code, since a 2025 court order stopped the 2021 code taking effect; it requires ice barrier at the eaves statewide and a 30 psf ground snow load inside the city.
We found no Michigan statute aimed at insurance-funded roofing contracts or specifically barring a contractor from paying or rebating your insurance deductible, though covering it by inflating the claim or the invoice sent to your insurer can be a fraudulent insurance act under MCL 500.4503(c). The Home Solicitation Sales Act lets you cancel a door-to-door sale until midnight on the third business day after signing. A 2026 bill to make insurers offer a fortified roof endorsement had not moved past committee by October.
Across 2016 to 2025 Calhoun County logged only six hail reports, two of them 2 inches or larger, 33 thunderstorm wind reports and two tornadoes, with $8.3 million of county-filed damage. The forecast zone adds 17 winter and wind events with $15.6 million more, nearly double, led by the 2017 and 2019 windstorms and a February 2023 ice storm that coated the county in three-quarters of an inch of freezing rain. Battle Creek averages about 65 inches of snow a year, and 34 percent of the city’s homes are rented.

Why it ranks here. The only certified firm headquartered in Battle Creek, at Master Elite with 396 GAF reviews averaging 4.8, the deepest base here, and BBB accreditation since 2019 with no complaints. Its company licence dates from 2012. BBB says 2003 while its site says 20-plus years, so we give no exact year.
Best fit for: Battle Creek homeowners who want a local Master Elite firm with a long review record.
What we would want clarified. The licence number its website shows is an individual’s, not the company’s, and we found no branch licences for its two other offices; ask which licence covers your job. Best fit for: Homeowners combining a reroof with siding, windows or interior work who want a long clean record.
What we would want clarified. It is based outside the metro and is a remodeller first, filed by BBB under remodelling rather than roofing. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Roof replacement and repair in Battle Creek, MI
Short answer: Roach Home Improvement, the only certified firm headquartered in Battle Creek, is the first call, with Master Elite status and 396 reviews averaging 4.8. Blue Line Remodeling & Construction of Portage suits a reroof combined with siding, windows or interior work. The rule that matters most: Michigan requires an examined LARA licence for any residential job of $600 or more, so look up the company’s own licence, not just an individual’s.
Winter windstorms, not hail, carry Battle Creek’s costliest roof damage. Calhoun County logged only six hail reports from 2016 to 2025, but on 8 March 2017 gusts of 60 to 70 mph left numerous homes with significant roof damage and $10 million recorded in the county, and on 24 February 2019 gusts near 60 mph added $5 million. On 22 February 2023 about three-quarters of an inch of freezing rain coated much of the county. On 28 February 2024 hail up to 2.5 inches fell from near Battle Creek to Marshall, and an EF1 ripped shingles off homes near Marshall. With 79 percent of the city’s homes built before 1980, decking condition matters on any reroof.
Battle Creek still enforces the 2015 Michigan Residential Code, because a 2025 court order stopped the 2021 code taking effect. Michigan does not amend IRC R908: a replacement means tear off to the deck, and R908.3.1.1 bars a recover over a water soaked or deteriorated roof, over slate, clay, cement or asbestos-cement tile, or where two or more layers already exist. Ice barrier is required at the eaves statewide, and the city uses a 30 psf ground snow load. A residential reroof permit costs a flat $103.50, starting without one costs $150 more, and a permit lapses if work does not start within six months. Michigan has no 25 percent roof rule.
Any residential job of $600 or more needs a residential builder or maintenance and alteration licence from LARA, which requires 60 hours of pre-licence courses and a passed exam; a company is licensed through a qualifying officer, and each additional office needs its own branch licence. Unlicensed work is a misdemeanour with fines of $5,000 to $25,000, and Battle Creek also requires contractors to register their state licence with the city, with proof of liability insurance and a $15 fee. No Michigan statute aimed at insurance-funded roofing contracts was found, but inflating a claim or invoice to cover your deductible can be a fraudulent insurance act under MCL 500.4503(c).
Roach Home Improvement does roof repair and replacement, standing seam metal, siding and windows, with a 25-year leak warranty, BBB accreditation since 2019 and no complaints; the licence number on its website is an individual’s, so ask which licence covers your job. Blue Line Remodeling & Construction handles residential roof replacement and repair and storm restoration alongside remodelling, and has been licensed since 2008, but it is based about 20 miles west and BBB files it under remodelling. Unranked licensed local firms include Sells & Son Roofing, licensed in roofing since 1986, and Cornerstone Roofing & Siding of Ceresco. Michigan’s Home Solicitation Sales Act lets you cancel a door-to-door sale until midnight on the third business day after signing.

What 2.75 inch hail does to a Battle Creek roof
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Battle Creek, MI statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 6 hail reports, 33 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 2 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $8.3 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Battle Creek in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 June 2019 | 2.75 in | Battle Creek | Calhoun |
| 28 February 2024 | 2.5 in | Renton | Calhoun |
| 7 April 2020 | 1.5 in | Beadle Lake | Calhoun |
| 3 June 2023 | 1.0 in | Wrights Corners | Calhoun |
| 20 April 2017 | 1.0 in | East Leroy | Calhoun |
| 31 March 2023 | 1.0 in | Burley Corners | Calhoun |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 1 June 2019 near Battle Creek, measured at 2.75 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 78 knots, about 90 mph, near East Leroy on 26 June 2021. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
Tornadoes. 2 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF1 near Marshall on 28 February 2024.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 26 June 2021 event near East Leroy, reproduced verbatim:
An NWS storm survey determined that there was an 8.5 mile long path of tree damage. Thunderstorm winds likely originated from a surging rear-flank downdraft associated with a mesocyclone embedded within a multicell storm line. Tree damage in the form of uproots and a mix of healthy and unhealthy snaps were common along the path. Most of the path length had EF-0 type of damage. In small sections of the path, damage was more in line with EF-1 estimated wind speeds in the form of several dozen trees snapped or uprooted. The worst damage was along M Drive S and K Drive S, near 10 Mile Road. Damage to property was relatively minor and ground surveys and tours of homes and farms with the property…
That account is the design case for a roof here, and it comes from the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in June (12), May (7), August (7). The worst years on record were 2024 (9), 2025 (9), 2020 (6). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Battle Creek, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.
Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.
What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Battle Creek. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.
Wind, not hail: the windstorms a county count misses
By report count this is a quiet hail market: six hail reports in Calhoun County in ten years. The decade’s recorded roof damage comes instead from non-thunderstorm windstorms, which NOAA files under the county’s forecast zone, so a county-only storm count misses most of it.
On 8 March 2017 a gust of 59 mph was measured at W.K. Kellogg Airport, and gusts of 60 to 70 mph brought down trees and power lines across the county. The Weather Service’s narrative records that at one point slightly over a million people were without power in Michigan and that numerous homes had significant roof damage; the Calhoun entry carries $10 million. On 24 February 2019 gusts near 60 mph did it again, with another million Michiganders losing power and $5 million recorded here. Those two days account for about 63 percent of the $23.9 million recorded across county and zone rows in the decade.
Ice adds weight. On 22 February 2023 about three-quarters of an inch of freezing rain coated much of Calhoun County in a storm that cut power to nearly 800,000 homes and businesses across southern Lower Michigan. In August 2023 a 61 knot thunderstorm gust at Marengo carries the costliest county entry, $5 million.
Even the hail came out of season. On 28 February 2024, a day after record warmth, a supercell dropped hail up to 2.5 inches from near Battle Creek to Marshall, and an EF1 near Marshall ripped shingles off a number of homes over nearly six miles.
The houses taking these storms are old: 79 percent of the city’s homes predate 1980 and only 2.6 percent of the county’s were built since 2010. For a reroof here, ask about decking condition, fastening for winter gales and the ice barrier the code requires at every eave, and check the roofer’s licence and its registration with the city.

How to check a Battle Creek roofer in ten minutes
Licensing is required in MI. Michigan requires a licence from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for any residential construction, alteration or repair with an aggregate contract price of $600 or more. Roofers may hold either a Residential Builder licence, which covers roofing, or a Maintenance and Alteration Contractor licence with the roofing classification. Contracting without a licence for residential work is a misdemeanour carrying a fine of $5,000 to $25,000 and up to a year in jail for a first offence (MCL 339.601(6)).
Applicants must complete a 60-hour state-approved prelicensure course and pass the state licensing exam. A Maintenance and Alteration licence is limited to the trade classifications its holder has passed, such as roofing; a Residential Builder licence covers residential construction as a whole.
Check here: Michigan LARA builder and M&A licence lookup. The $600 threshold means anyone contracting directly with a homeowner to reroof needs a licence. The exemptions are narrow: owners working on their own home or maintaining their own rental property, and crews working solely under contract to a licensed builder. A company must hold its own licence through a qualifying officer, so look up the business name, not just the owner’s individual licence, and check that it is active and, for a Maintenance and Alteration licence, that it carries the roofing classification.
For what a full replacement costs across Michigan, including state labor rates and permit rules, see our Michigan roof replacement cost guide.
Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.
What the rest of the Battle Creek field looks like
2 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Battle Creek, MI statistical area, of which 0 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 451 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.84. The statistical area had a 2024 population of 133,785, a change of -0.39% against the 2020 census base, per the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates.

How these Battle Creek rankings were produced
Every contractor in the Battle Creek, MI pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 2 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 2 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.84. The top two were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Anything unflattering that research surfaced appears above alongside the rest, and no company bought its position.
Set aside in Battle Creek. Contractors that would otherwise have scored into the top two were removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.
- Patriot Exteriors LLC, which scored 86.1: Excluded on service area. A licensed Portage roofer about 20 miles west whose BBB service area is Kalamazoo County and Portage only, and whose website names Kalamazoo, Portage and south-west Michigan without any Calhoun County community. It is ranked on our Kalamazoo page.
- AAA Renovations Roofing & Remodeling, which scored 74.7: Excluded on licence and service area. Its Michigan residential builder company licence expired on 31 May 2026 and the state register shows it as lapsed, with no other current licence found; its published service area of Vicksburg, Portage, Three Rivers and west Michigan names no Calhoun County community.
- Portage Exteriors LLC, which scored 58.3: Excluded on service area. Properly licensed for roofing, but its own service list names only Kalamazoo County communities, stopping at Richland and Galesburg, and BBB’s service area is Portage.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. The questions that come up most in Battle Creek
Who is the best roofer in Battle Creek, MI?
Roach Home Improvement of Battle Creek, MI scores highest in the Battle Creek metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score, at 81.2 out of 100 as of October 2026. It holds Master Elite certification with a 4.8 rating across 396 reviews. Highest-scoring is not the same as best fit for your specific job, and the company behind it scores within 11.4 points.
What is the 25% rule for roofing in Michigan?
Michigan has no 25 percent roof rule. The Michigan Residential Code in force is the 2015 IRC with state amendments, which leave the reroofing section unchanged, so a replacement tears off to the deck and recovers are limited by roof condition, material and number of layers.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Battle Creek?
Yes. A residential reroof permit in Battle Creek is a flat $103.50, starting work without one costs $150 more, and the permit lapses if work does not start within six months. The contractor must also have registered its state licence with the city’s inspection division.
Who does roof repair in Battle Creek?
Roach Home Improvement, headquartered in Battle Creek, does roof repair and replacement and offers a 25-year leak warranty. Blue Line Remodeling & Construction of Portage also does residential roof repair and storm restoration and names Calhoun County among its service counties.
How do I know if a roofer in Battle Creek is good?
Look up the business name on the LARA licence lookup, not just the owner’s individual licence, and check that it is active and covers roofing; branch offices need their own licences. Then check city registration, the BBB file and review depth, where Roach Home Improvement leads locally with 396 reviews.
How many certified roofing contractors serve Battle Creek?
2 contractors on the GAF certification registry serve the principal cities of the Battle Creek, MI statistical area as of October 2026, of which 0 hold President’s Club status.
How much damaging hail does Battle Creek get?
The Battle Creek, MI statistical area recorded 6 hail reports of 1 inch or larger and 2 of 2 inches or larger between 2016 and 2025 in the NOAA Storm Events Database. The largest hailstone reported measured 2.75 inches.
Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?
No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on the top two.
What was the worst hailstorm in Battle Creek in the last ten years?
The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Battle Creek, MI statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 2.75 inches, reported near Battle Creek on 1 June 2019. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired. Across the decade the metro recorded 6 hail reports. When is the worst time of year for roof damage in Battle Creek?
Severe-weather reports in the Battle Creek, MI statistical area cluster in June, May, August, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Booking non-urgent roof work outside those months usually means shorter lead times, because local crews are not simultaneously triaging storm callouts.
Do roofers need a licence in MI?
What should I check before hiring a roofer in Battle Creek?
The $600 threshold means anyone contracting directly with a homeowner to reroof needs a licence. The exemptions are narrow: owners working on their own home or maintaining their own rental property, and crews working solely under contract to a licensed builder. A company must hold its own licence through a qualifying officer, so look up the business name, not just the owner’s individual licence, and check that it is active and, for a Maintenance and Alteration licence, that it carries the roofing classification.
Wind, not hail: the windstorms a county count misses?
By report count this is a quiet hail market: six hail reports in Calhoun County in ten years. The decade’s recorded roof damage comes instead from non-thunderstorm windstorms, which NOAA files under the county’s forecast zone, so a county-only storm count misses most of it.
Is Battle Creek a hard market to find a good roofer in?
Battle Creek’s costliest roof weather is not hail, of which Calhoun County logged just six reports in a decade, but winter windstorms: the March 2017 gale that left a million Michiganders without power and roofs across the county damaged carries $10 million on its own. They fall on some of the oldest housing in Michigan, with a median home from 1956 inside the city. Michigan licenses roofers by exam. Five certified firms appear in the directory; three are excluded, one for a lapsed licence and two that publish no Calhoun County coverage, and two are ranked.
Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Battle Creek?
Wind, by a wide margin. The Battle Creek, MI statistical area logged 33 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 6 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
Why is Patriot Exteriors LLC not on this list?
Excluded on service area. A licensed Portage roofer about 20 miles west whose BBB service area is Kalamazoo County and Portage only, and whose website names Kalamazoo, Portage and south-west Michigan without any Calhoun County community. It is ranked on our Kalamazoo page..
