Best Roofers in Beckley, WV: Why None Is Ranked, and Who We Verified

No Beckley roofer clears our certified ranking floor. The contractors we verified individually against local licence and manufacturer records, and the checks to run before you hire. No paid placement.

Best Roofers in Beckley, WV: Why None Is Ranked, and Who We Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026 no roofer serving the Beckley metro qualifies for our certified ranking. GAF’s directory lists one certified firm near Beckley, and it is based in Princeton, about 40 miles south in Mercer County, with no published service area covering Raleigh or Fayette County and a C+ BBB rating. So The Roofing Brief ranks none here. Instead this page lists four Beckley-area roofers we checked against the West Virginia contractor licence record, with what each record shows and where it falls short.

The Roofing Brief searched the GAF certification registry across the principal cities of the Beckley, WV statistical area. No roofing contractor based inside the metro clears the evidence floor this ranking applies, which is manufacturer certification plus at least five independent customer reviews, so this page ranks nobody rather than pad a list. What it does instead is set out the contractors we could verify individually against the credential that actually exists here. Beckley sits at about 2,500 feet on the Appalachian plateau, so its roofs carry real winter: NOAA’s normal at the airport is 55.9 inches of snow a year, plus regular ice. Summer brings the wind: on 2 April 2024, the day West Virginia set its record for tornadoes in one event, an EF2 crossed Fayette County and threw a metal roof 350 yards. No certified roofer in GAF’s directory serves the metro, so none is ranked.

Hail, codes and what they cost a Beckley homeowner

West Virginia licenses contractors by job size, not trade. Under W. Va. Code 30-42-3(d) anyone taking on residential work of $5,000 or more needs a Contractor Licensing Board licence, and there is no tested roofing class: roofing-only firms usually hold a Specialty licence with roofing in its scope. Applicants pass a business and law exam and swear to tax, workers’ compensation and wage bond compliance, but the state requires no bond or liability insurance.

The City of Beckley requires a building permit to construct, alter or repair a building, and every contractor must register with the Code Enforcement Office first, filing its state licence, tax registration, workers’ compensation and liability insurance. Under state law the permit desk may not issue a permit to an unlicensed contractor where a licence is required. The city builds to the 2018 international codes.

On an insurance-funded roof, West Virginia’s Storm Scammer Consumer Protection Act lets you cancel before midnight of the fifth business day after the insurer denies all or part of the claim. The roofer may not take advance payment until that period has run, except for emergency repairs, may not negotiate your claim, and may not offer to pay or rebate your deductible; a wilful violation is a misdemeanour carrying up to $5,000 and a year in jail.

Beckley’s housing is old and exposed: the city’s median home dates from 1960 and 44.6 percent of its homes are rented, while 13.8 percent of all housing units across Raleigh and Fayette counties are mobile homes, the roofs most exposed when straight-line winds hit. Winter adds ice: the November 2018 freezing rain left a third of an inch at the Raleigh County airport.

Beckley-area roofers checked against the West Virginia licence record

No roofer qualifies for our certified ranking here, so none is ranked. These four hold West Virginia contractor licences with roofing in scope, per a mirror of the licensing board’s record; confirm the licence is current with the board before signing. They are not scored and we are not recommending them.

Company Verified credential
Master Roofing (Master Roofers & Builders Inc) Specialty licence WV012463 with roofing as its only scope; the same corporation since 2001; BBB A+, not accredited, no complaints in three years. The mirrored licence showed an expiry of 12 October 2026, so confirm renewal.
Elite Roofing Specialty licence WV056705 covering roofing and siding; Owens Corning top-tier contractor with a Beckley office; BBB A, not accredited, with three complaints in three years. The Beckley trade name dates from March 2026.
Cenvar Roofing Licence WV065759 for general building and specialty work; Owens Corning top-tier Beckley branch of a Lynchburg, Virginia firm, BBB accredited A+. Both of its West Virginia business registrations were flagged for an overdue annual report in October 2026.
Clay’s Tree, Roofing & Rental Licence WV023659 covering residential, specialty and roofing; BBB accredited since 2018, A+, no complaints in three years. Tree work is its first line of business, with roofing alongside.

Roof replacement and repair in Beckley, WV

Short answer: No certified roofer in GAF’s directory serves the Beckley metro, so none is ranked. Four local firms hold West Virginia licences with roofing in scope: Master Roofing, Elite Roofing, Cenvar Roofing and Clay’s Tree, Roofing & Rental; confirm each licence is current. The rule that matters most: Beckley requires a building permit to repair a building, and the permit desk may not issue one to an unlicensed contractor where a licence is required.

Beckley’s roofs face two loads. Winter brings 55.9 inches of snow a year at the airport, regular ice and 16 heavy snow events in the forecast zones over the decade; the November 2018 freezing rain left a third of an inch at the Raleigh County airport. Wind brings the sudden damage: on 2 April 2024 an EF2 crossed Fayette County near Edmond and threw a metal roof about 350 yards, a 100 mph microburst blew a roof off a home at Jodie and Swiss, and the same squall line stripped a metal roof near Dorothy. At these wind speeds fastening and edge detailing matter more than the panel itself, so ask how eaves, flashing and edge fastening are specified.

The City of Beckley requires a building permit to construct, alter or repair a building and builds to the 2018 international codes. Every contractor must first register with the Code Enforcement Office, filing its state licence, tax registration, workers’ compensation and liability insurance. The State Building Code adopts the 2018 IRC, and where it applies a replacement means tear off to the deck (R908.3), while a recover is barred over a water soaked or deteriorated roof, over slate, clay, cement or asbestos-cement tile, or where two or more layers already exist (R908.3.1.1). West Virginia has no 25 percent roof rule.

West Virginia licenses by job size: residential work of $5,000 or more needs a Contractor Licensing Board licence, roofing-only firms usually hold a Specialty licence with roofing in scope, and the state requires no bond or liability insurance. A written contract is mandatory at $10,000 or more. On an insurance-funded roof, the Storm Scammer Consumer Protection Act lets you cancel before midnight of the fifth business day after the insurer denies all or part of the claim; the roofer may not take advance payment until then except for emergency repairs, may not negotiate your claim and may not offer to pay or rebate your deductible. The state’s unfair trade practices rule has no matching requirement.

Master Roofing holds Specialty licence WV012463 with roofing as its only scope, though the mirrored record showed an October 2026 expiry, so confirm renewal. Elite Roofing’s licence covers roofing and siding, but its BBB file shows three complaints in three years. Cenvar Roofing is the Beckley branch of a Lynchburg, Virginia firm, and its state business registrations were flagged for an overdue annual report. Clay’s Tree, Roofing & Rental puts tree work first, with roofing alongside. Beckley’s housing is old, with a median home from 1960, and the 13.8 percent of units across Raleigh and Fayette counties that are mobile homes are the roofs most exposed when straight-line winds hit.

The 24 inch-plus hail reports behind a Beckley roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 2 counties of the Beckley, WV statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 34 hail reports, 131 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 1 tornado. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $792,000; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Beckley in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
23 May 2019 3.0 in Jodie Fayette
23 June 2016 2.0 in Meadow Bridge Fayette
23 June 2016 2.0 in Beelick Knob Fayette
2 April 2024 1.75 in Boomer Fayette
18 March 2021 1.5 in Hotchkiss Raleigh
23 June 2016 1.5 in Greenstown Fayette

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 23 May 2019 near Jodie, measured at 3.0 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 96 knots, about 110 mph, near Divide on 2 April 2024. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 1 tornado touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Edmond on 2 April 2024.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 26 May 2024 event near Romont, reproduced verbatim:

Extensive tree damage occurred along a quarter mile stretch of Rich Creek Road. Several mature trees were snapped with many more uprooted in a roughly 100 yard wide path. The felled trees were pushed downhill with a divergent pattern to the damage indicative of a microburst. Peak wind speeds in the core of the microburst likely reached up to 110 miles per hour.

A roof in this metro is built against events like that one, as recorded by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in April (42), June (31), May (31). The worst years on record were 2024 (33), 2016 (22), 2022 (22). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Beckley, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Beckley. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

2 April 2024: the day West Virginia set its tornado record and Fayette County took an EF2

On 2 April 2024 an intense squall line raced across southern and central West Virginia. The National Weather Service confirmed ten tornadoes in the event, a record for any single event in the state, and one of them crossed Fayette County in the afternoon near Edmond as an EF2, running 5.3 miles and reaching 325 yards wide, with tree damage suggesting winds of about 130 mph.

Along US 60 the tornado damaged or destroyed several homes and businesses. One home was shifted several feet off its foundation and its metal roof was thrown about 350 yards to the tree line across the highway. It is the only tornado recorded in Fayette or Raleigh County in the NOAA Storm Events file for 2016 to 2025.

The morning squall line had already done damage. At Jodie and Swiss, on the Fayette and Nicholas county line, the weather service surveyed a microburst with maximum winds of 100 mph that blew a roof off a home, and near Dorothy in Raleigh County the same line stripped a metal roof from a house. That afternoon at Divide a 110 mph thunderstorm wind trapped a person inside a damaged structure.

That one year stands out. Four of the five thunderstorm wind reports of 58 knots or more in the two counties over the decade came in 2024: three on 2 April and a 96-knot microburst at Romont on 26 May that snapped mature trees. Across 2016 to 2025 the metro logged 131 thunderstorm wind reports, 34 hail reports topped by 3-inch stones at Jodie in May 2019, and $791,700 of recorded damage.

Metal roofs feature in both 2 April narratives, and at these wind speeds fastening and edge detailing matter more than the panel itself. Beckley’s winters add a second load, with 55.9 inches of snow a year in the 1991 to 2020 normals and 16 heavy snow events in the forecast zones over the decade, so ask any roofer how the eaves, flashing and edge fastening are specified for both.

Three things to confirm before work starts in Beckley

Licensing is required in WV. West Virginia licenses contractors through the Contractor Licensing Board, but the requirement turns on the size of the job rather than on the trade. Under W. Va. Code 30-42-3(d) a person is a “contractor”, and so needs a licence, once the cost of the undertaking reaches $5,000 for residential work or $25,000 for commercial work. Below $5,000 a residential re-roof falls outside the definition entirely and no state licence is required. Note that the Act was moved in 2021 from Chapter 21, Article 11 to Chapter 30, Article 42, so older guidance citing a $2,500 threshold is quoting repealed law.

There is no roofing classification among West Virginia’s tested licence types; a roofing-only firm is normally licensed as a Specialty contractor with roofing listed in its scope, and a Residential licence also covers roofing. Every applicant must pass the West Virginia business and law examination at 70 percent; any further exam for a specialty licence is set by the Board. The state requires no licence bond or general liability insurance, though every applicant must swear to business franchise tax, workers’ compensation, employment security and wage bond compliance; the board’s fee is $90 a year, under a statutory cap of $150. Separately, the Storm Scammer Consumer Protection Act (W. Va. Code 46A-6M) lets a homeowner cancel an insurance-funded roofing contract before midnight on the fifth business day after the insurer denies all or part of the claim, bars advance payments until that five-day period has run (emergency repairs excepted), bars claim negotiation by roofers, bars offering to pay or rebate a deductible, and makes any wilful violation a misdemeanour punishable by a fine of up to $5,000, up to a year in jail, or both.

Check here: West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board licence lookup. The permit desk is the strongest lever a West Virginia homeowner has. Under W. Va. Code 30-42-10(a) an applicant must either prove to the building inspector that they are licensed or file an affidavit that they are not subject to licensure, and the inspector may not issue a building permit to a person who does not hold a valid licence where one is required. A written contract is separately mandatory at $10,000 or more. So a contractor who suggests working without a permit is also routing around the one checkpoint that tests their licence.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Beckley rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Beckley, WV pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 0 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 0 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 3.8. No contractor cleared the floor, so the alternatives listed above were instead researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Where that research turned up something awkward it is on the page, and no placement was paid for.

Set aside in Beckley. A contractor that would otherwise have scored into the top no was removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.

  • Ideal Roofing Systems LLC, which scored 29.9: Excluded on service area. A Princeton roofer about 40 miles south in Mercer County, outside the metro, with no website or published service area naming Beckley, Raleigh County or Fayette County; BBB rates it C+ with one complaint in three years.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. The questions that come up most in Beckley

Who are the best roofers in Beckley, WV?

No Beckley roofer qualifies for our certified ranking, so The Roofing Brief ranks none. It checked four Beckley-area roofers against West Virginia’s contractor licence record instead: Master Roofing, Elite Roofing, Cenvar Roofing and Clay’s Tree, Roofing & Rental. In West Virginia any residential job of $5,000 or more needs a state contractor licence, and in Beckley every contractor must also register with Code Enforcement before pulling a permit.

What is the 25% rule for roofing in West Virginia?

West Virginia has no 25 percent roof rule. Where the State Building Code is adopted, a replacement means tear off to the deck, and a recover is barred over a water soaked or deteriorated roof, slate or tile, or two or more existing layers.

Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Beckley?

Yes. The City of Beckley requires a building permit to construct, alter or repair a building, and contractors must register with the Code Enforcement Office first. A contractor who suggests skipping the permit is routing around the one checkpoint that tests their licence.

Can I cancel a roofing contract if my insurance claim is denied in West Virginia?

Yes. Under the Storm Scammer Consumer Protection Act you may cancel an insurance-funded roofing contract before midnight of the fifth business day after the insurer denies all or part of the claim. A wilful violation by the roofer is a misdemeanour carrying a fine of up to $5,000, up to a year in jail, or both.

How do I know if a roofer in Beckley is good?

Look the licence up on the West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board site and confirm it is current and has roofing in scope, since the state has no tested roofing class. Then check the BBB file and how the firm specifies fastening and flashing for both snow and high wind.

How many certified roofing contractors serve Beckley?

0 contractors on the GAF certification registry serve the principal cities of the Beckley, WV statistical area as of October 2026, of which 0 hold President’s Club status.

How much damaging hail does Beckley get?

The Beckley, WV statistical area recorded 24 hail reports of 1 inch or larger and 3 of 2 inches or larger between 2016 and 2025 in the NOAA Storm Events Database. The largest hailstone reported measured 3.0 inches.

Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?

No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on every verified alternative listed.

What was the worst hailstorm in Beckley in the last ten years?

The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Beckley, WV statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 3.0 inches, reported near Jodie on 23 May 2019. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired. Across the decade the metro recorded 34 hail reports. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $792,000; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

When is the worst time of year for roof damage in Beckley?

Severe-weather reports in the Beckley, WV statistical area cluster in April, June, May, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Outside those months local crews are not triaging storm damage, so lead times are shorter and scheduling is easier.

Do roofers need a licence in WV?

West Virginia licenses contractors through the Contractor Licensing Board, but the requirement turns on the size of the job rather than on the trade. Under W. Va. Code 30-42-3(d) a person is a “contractor”, and so needs a licence, once the cost of the undertaking reaches $5,000 for residential work or $25,000 for commercial work. What should I check before hiring a roofer in Beckley?

The permit desk is the strongest lever a West Virginia homeowner has. Under W. Va. Code 30-42-10(a) an applicant must either prove to the building inspector that they are licensed or file an affidavit that they are not subject to licensure, and the inspector may not issue a building permit to a person who does not hold a valid licence where one is required. 2 April 2024: the day West Virginia set its tornado record and Fayette County took an EF2?

On 2 April 2024 an intense squall line raced across southern and central West Virginia. The National Weather Service confirmed ten tornadoes in the event, a record for any single event in the state, and one of them crossed Fayette County in the afternoon near Edmond as an EF2, running 5.3 miles and reaching 325 yards wide, with tree damage suggesting winds of about 130 mph.

Is Beckley a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Beckley sits at about 2,500 feet on the Appalachian plateau, so its roofs carry real winter: NOAA’s normal at the airport is 55.9 inches of snow a year, plus regular ice. Summer brings the wind: on 2 April 2024, the day West Virginia set its record for tornadoes in one event, an EF2 crossed Fayette County and threw a metal roof 350 yards. No certified roofer in GAF’s directory serves the metro, so none is ranked.

Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Beckley?

Wind, by a wide margin. The Beckley, WV statistical area logged 131 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 24 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.

Why is Ideal Roofing Systems LLC not on this list?

Excluded on service area. A Princeton roofer about 40 miles south in Mercer County, outside the metro, with no website or published service area naming Beckley, Raleigh County or Fayette County; BBB rates it C+ with one complaint in three years..
