Short answer: As of October 2026, the five highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Coeur d’Alene, ID metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Lake City Roofing (81.1), Steiner’s Quality Roofing (SQR) (62.8), RC Roofing Specialists (61.8), Hayden Lake Roofing (54.7), Spokane Roofing Company (52.8). Each is certified by a manufacturer whose register we checked by hand, each rating has been tested against a source outside that register, and nobody bought a place on this page.
The Roofing Brief scored 6 certified roofing contractors serving the Coeur d’Alene metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top five individually to confirm its record. In Kootenai County roofs are broken by falling conifers and loaded by snow, not hail: the forecast zone logged 13 high wind events and 109 heavy snow entries over the past decade, and two windstorms, in January 2021 and December 2025, drew federal disaster declarations. Idaho registers contractors without testing them, and bars cities from adding licences of their own, but Coeur d’Alene inspects every reroof’s underlayment. Seven certified firms appear in the directory; one has no working website or published service area, so five are ranked.
What actually ages a Coeur d’Alene roof
Idaho registers contractors rather than licensing them: since 2006 anyone contracting for work of $2,000 or more must be registered with the Idaho Contractors Board. Registration requires $300,000 of liability insurance and workers’ compensation, but no trade exam. Contracting unregistered is a misdemeanour punishable by up to $1,000 and six months, and an unregistered contractor cannot sue to collect or file a lien. The Board can suspend or revoke registrations or fine up to $1,000.
Idaho Code 54-5213 has barred cities and counties from running their own contractor licensing since 2007, so the state registration is the one record to check; building departments must write the registration number on every permit. Registrations can lapse, and several in this market have, so check the status on the day you sign: an inactive registrant may not contract. We found no Idaho statute on deductible rebates or storm-contract cancellation, but could not confirm that from the state’s own site.
The City of Coeur d’Alene requires a separate reroof permit, priced by size: a $50 processing fee plus $100 for under ten squares, rising to $250 above 40, with $50 more for new sheathing. Its form requires inspections of new sheathing, of the underlayment after tear-off and before the new covering goes on, and a final, and requires ice barrier underlayment. The city enforces the 2018 International Codes. Unincorporated Kootenai County designs to 115 mph wind and maps flat-roof snow loads of 40 to 60 psf by zone, with an engineered load in the highest zone.
Hail is minor: six county hail reports in ten years, the largest 2.75 inches near Hauser in August 2022. The roof threat is cold-front wind toppling large trees, and snow. Kootenai County’s housing is among the youngest of any metro we cover, with a median year built of 1996, and 40.5 percent of homes in the city of Coeur d’Alene are rented.

- Lake City Roofing & Construction, Inc., active and in good standing since 1998.. Idaho Secretary of State
What they actually do. Asphalt and metal roofing, flat roofs, gutters, siding, deck waterproofing and windows.
Why it ranks here. The clear leader: Master Elite certification and a 4.9 across 206 reviews from a three-generation Post Falls family firm that began in 1987 and has been on Idaho’s contractor register since the day registration began in 2005.
Best fit for: Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls homeowners who want the deepest local record.
What we would want clarified. It is not BBB accredited, and its website was unreachable when we checked, so we could not read its published service area, though Post Falls is inside the metro. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Best fit for: Homeowners dealing with ice dams as well as replacement.
What we would want clarified. Its 4.4 rating rests on only 14 reviews. Its founding year is 2002, 2005 or 2006 depending on the record. A separately named Steiners Quality Construction LLC registered in August 2026 with a Spokane Valley address, and we could not establish whether it is related. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

- Accredited since 25 July 2023 with an A+ rating, business established 2015, no complaints.. BBB business profile

Best fit for: Homeowners on the state line who want one roofer licensed on both sides.
What we would want clarified. It is based in Liberty Lake, Washington, and its Idaho registration is recent and has lapsed twice, in March 2025 and March 2026, each time reinstated weeks later; check its status on the day you sign. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing, roof cleaning, gutter protection and snow guards.
Why it ranks here. A small family roofer in Hayden run by North Idaho natives, with a 4.7 across 16 reviews and services aimed at the local climate, including snow guards.
Best fit for: Hayden and north county homeowners who want snow guards fitted.
What we would want clarified. Its Idaho registration was inactive for about ten months, from June 2025 to April 2026, when it could not lawfully contract; it is active now. Its review base is thin. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

- Roofing specialty licence, active since 2004.. Washington L&I contractor data
- A rating, not accredited, founded 1907, one complaint closed in three years.. BBB business profile
What they actually do. Commercial single-ply and metal roofing, roof maintenance, and residential roof replacement.
Why it ranks here. The oldest firm in the pool by its own and BBB’s account, serving Spokane since 1907, registered in Idaho since 2010 and serving northern Idaho, with 82 reviews.
Best fit for: Metal and low-slope roofs, and owners of larger buildings.
What we would want clarified. It is commercial-led, with residential replacement a secondary line. It is based in Liberty Lake, Washington. BBB rates it A rather than A+, with one complaint, and its website still cites an Idaho public works licence that lapsed in 2024. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. 7 severe weather reports in a decade, and why that matters in Coeur d’Alene
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Coeur d’Alene, ID statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 6 hail reports, 2 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 0 tornadoes. The database’s property-damage fields are left blank for most of these reports, so it carries no usable loss total for this metro and we do not quote one.

The biggest hail to fall on Coeur d’Alene in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 August 2022 | 2.75 in | State Line | Kootenai |
| 10 August 2019 | 1.5 in | Coeur D Alene | Kootenai |
| 3 June 2022 | 1.0 in | Athol | Kootenai |
| 8 June 2023 | 1.0 in | Dudley | Kootenai |
| 13 June 2023 | 1.0 in | Bayview | Kootenai |
| 3 June 2022 | 0.88 in | Kootenai | Kootenai |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 11 August 2022 near State Line, measured at 2.75 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 56 knots, about 64 mph, near Lane on 23 July 2019. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 25 September 2024 event near Coeur D Alene, reproduced verbatim:
The storm caused 1019 customers to lose power in Kootenai County. A gust of 54 MPH was recorded 2 miles South of Twin Lakes.
That account is the design case for a roof here, and it comes from the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in June (4), August (2), July (1). The worst years on record were 2022 (3), 2019 (2), 2023 (2). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Coeur d’Alene, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.
Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.
What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Coeur d’Alene. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.
Wind, falling conifers and snow
On 13 January 2021 a strong cold front swept the Idaho Panhandle. NWS recorded numerous reports of downed trees and power lines, blocked roads and damage to houses, about 30,000 customers without power in Kootenai County, mostly around Coeur d’Alene and Hayden Lake, and $5 million of property damage; it took a week to restore power. A motorist was killed when a tree struck his truck near Lake Coeur d’Alene, and FEMA declared a disaster for straight-line winds.
It happened again on 17 December 2025. Coeur d’Alene’s airport recorded a 66 mph gust before dawn, and NWS logged a death in Fernan Lake Village when a tree fell on a house and struck the person inside, with other trees damaging houses across the area. FEMA declared a second straight-line wind disaster for the county in April 2026, and a third, for storms and flooding in March 2026, followed.
Earlier storms set the pattern. On 1 February 2020 falling trees did major damage to three homes at a Post Falls mobile home park and damaged rooftops on 16th Street in Coeur d’Alene. In September 2020 gusts of 45 to 60 mph left an estimated 115,000 people in the county without power.
Snow is the routine load. The Coeur d’Alene forecast zone logged 109 heavy snow entries from 2016 to 2025, and the county maps design snow loads from 40 to 60 psf across its zones. Coeur d’Alene’s reroof permit answers both threats: it requires ice barrier underlayment and an inspection of that underlayment after tear-off, before the new roof covers it.
For a homeowner the questions are about trees, fastening and ice: whether the roofer will flag overhanging conifers, how the edges and ridge will be fastened, and when the underlayment inspection is booked. And check the roofer’s Idaho registration on the day you sign, because registrations here do lapse.

Before you sign anything in Coeur d’Alene
Licensing is required in ID. Idaho requires contractor registration with the Idaho Contractors Board, part of the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, for any construction work of $2,000 or more in combined labour and materials. It is a registration rather than a licence.
Registration requires proof of $300,000 general liability insurance and a fee, but no trade examination. Idaho does not test roofing competence at state level, so a registration number confirms that a contractor is insured and on the register, not that anyone has assessed its work. Registrants must display the registration number on contracts, permits, advertising and jobsites within 60 days.
Check here: Idaho DOPL contractor registration lookup. Because the state tests no competence, manufacturer certification does more work in Idaho than the registration does. Cities and counties cannot add their own contractor licences: Idaho Code 54-5213 has barred local contractor registration or licensing since 1 January 2007, so the state registration is the one record to check, alongside the local building permit.
Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.
How many certified roofers Coeur d’Alene actually has
6 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Coeur d’Alene, ID statistical area, of which 0 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 437 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.629. How these Coeur d’Alene rankings were produced
Every contractor in the Coeur d’Alene, ID pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 6 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 2 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.629. The top five were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Anything unflattering that research surfaced appears above alongside the rest, and no company bought its position.
Set aside in Coeur d’Alene. A contractor that would otherwise have scored into the top five was removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.
- Buckingham Roofing LLC, which scored 54.1: Excluded because we could find no evidence of its service area or trade: its Idaho registration is active, but its former website domain now redirects to an unrelated gambling site, we found no BBB profile, and it publishes no service area we could read. It has only nine reviews.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on the top five.
What was the worst hailstorm in Coeur d’Alene in the last ten years?
The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Coeur d’Alene, ID statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 2.75 inches, reported near State Line on 11 August 2022. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired. Across the decade the metro recorded 6 hail reports. The database’s property-damage fields are left blank for most of these reports, so it carries no usable loss total for this metro and we do not quote one.
When is the worst time of year for roof damage in Coeur d’Alene?
Severe-weather reports in the Coeur d’Alene, ID statistical area cluster in June, August, July, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Booking non-urgent roof work outside those months usually means shorter lead times, because local crews are not simultaneously triaging storm callouts.
Do roofers need a licence in ID?
Idaho requires contractor registration with the Idaho Contractors Board, part of the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, for any construction work of $2,000 or more in combined labour and materials. It is a registration rather than a licence. Registration requires proof of $300,000 general liability insurance and a fee, but no trade examination. Idaho does not test roofing competence at state level, so a registration number confirms that a contractor is insured and on the register, not that anyone has assessed its work. Registrants must display the registration number on contracts, permits, advertising and jobsites within 60 days.
What should I check before hiring a roofer in Coeur d’Alene?
Because the state tests no competence, manufacturer certification does more work in Idaho than the registration does. Cities and counties cannot add their own contractor licences: Idaho Code 54-5213 has barred local contractor registration or licensing since 1 January 2007, so the state registration is the one record to check, alongside the local building permit.
Wind, falling conifers and snow?
On 13 January 2021 a strong cold front swept the Idaho Panhandle. NWS recorded numerous reports of downed trees and power lines, blocked roads and damage to houses, about 30,000 customers without power in Kootenai County, mostly around Coeur d’Alene and Hayden Lake, and $5 million of property damage; it took a week to restore power. A motorist was killed when a tree struck his truck near Lake Coeur d’Alene, and FEMA declared a disaster for straight-line winds.
Is Coeur d’Alene a hard market to find a good roofer in?
In Kootenai County roofs are broken by falling conifers and loaded by snow, not hail: the forecast zone logged 13 high wind events and 109 heavy snow entries over the past decade, and two windstorms, in January 2021 and December 2025, drew federal disaster declarations. Idaho registers contractors without testing them, and bars cities from adding licences of their own, but Coeur d’Alene inspects every reroof’s underlayment. Seven certified firms appear in the directory; one has no working website or published service area, so five are ranked.
Why is Buckingham Roofing LLC not on this list?
Excluded because we could find no evidence of its service area or trade: its Idaho registration is active, but its former website domain now redirects to an unrelated gambling site, we found no BBB profile, and it publishes no service area we could read. It has only nine reviews..
