A master rib metal roof is built from MasterRib panels: exposed-fastener steel sheets that cover 36 inches with 3/4 inch trapezoidal ribs on 9 inch centers, screwed through the flats into purlins or a solid deck. Union Corrugating, MBCI and ABC Metal Roofing all publish those dimensions, in 29 gauge standard and 26 gauge optional, with a 3:12 minimum recommended slope. All three brands belong to Cornerstone Building Brands.
The pages ranking for this term are manufacturer and retailer product pages, each showing one brand’s spec block. This guide puts them side by side and adds what they leave out: which other mills sell the same profile under another name, how screw spacing changes the wind rating in the current Florida product approval, a fastener and lap schedule from the installation manual, and a per-square-foot price worked out from named supplier listings.
Master rib metal roof: key numbers at a glance
The figures most buyers need are the coverage width, rib geometry, gauge, slope and price. Each row below comes from a named manufacturer document, product approval or supplier listing. Prices are an October 2026 snapshot; steel panel prices follow coil prices and freight, so a local quote is the number to budget against.

What is a master rib metal roof?
A master rib metal roof is an exposed-fastener steel roof made from the MasterRib profile, a 36 inch panel with five 3/4 inch major ribs spaced 9 inches apart and low stiffening ribs in the flats. Screws go through the flat next to each rib, so the fastener heads stay visible. Union Corrugating calls it its most popular panel and lists it for residential, commercial and post-frame roofs and walls.
Two design details set the profile apart on Union’s product page. The ribs are wider than many older ag panels, which Union says adds strength and makes sheets easier to handle, and the under-lap rib carries an oversized anti-siphoning channel that Union says adds leak resistance under extreme wind and rain loads. Union lists MasterRib as suitable for solid deck or open framing.
Who makes MasterRib panels?
MasterRib is a Cornerstone Building Brands trade name used by at least three of its brands: Union Corrugating, MBCI and ABC Metal Roofing. MBCI says its MasterRib was formerly sold as Stormproof, and ABC says its version was formerly Imperial Rib. Cornerstone completed its purchase of Union Corrugating in December 2021, per its press release.
The shared Florida approval confirms the family tie. FL42379, filed by Cornerstone and approved in December 2023, covers a “Steel Rib” panel with 0.75 inch ribs and 36 inch coverage, sold under the trade names Imperial Rib, Stormproof, Residential and Master Rib, and states the approval may be used by any Cornerstone entity, including American Building Components (ABC), MBCI and Union Corrugating. Dealers also sell the panel under the MasterRib name: PBS Direct lists Union Corrugating as the vendor on its MasterRib pages, and Classic Metals in Lexington, North Carolina sells a 29 gauge MasterRib panel.
Same profile, different names
Most mills roll a 36 inch panel with 3/4 inch ribs on 9 inch centers under their own name. The table lists named equivalents verified on each maker’s or seller’s own page. Because the rib geometry matches on paper, ridge caps, closures and trim often interchange, but rib shape varies slightly between mills, so confirm closure fit before mixing brands on one roof.

MasterRib dimensions and span capacity
MasterRib covers 36 inches, so each linear foot of panel covers 3 square feet and a roofing square (100 sq ft) takes about 33.3 linear feet before waste. The ribs stand 3/4 inch tall on 9 inch centers. Union’s installation manual publishes allowable loads by purlin span, which shows how far the panel can run between supports on open framing.

Source: Union Corrugating MasterRib Installation Manual (rev. 10/11), theoretical allowable loads per the 2001 AISI specification, three or more equal spans. These are panel-strength values only: Union notes that purlins, decks and fasteners must be designed for the same loads, and that panel self weight comes off the live load. The same manual sets a 2 foot maximum purlin spacing for roofs.
Which gauge, substrate and finish should you choose?
For a house or a high-wind site, 26 gauge is the sturdier choice; 29 gauge is the economy standard on barns and sheds. Union sells MasterRib in 29 and 26 gauge unpainted Galvalume Plus, 29 gauge unpainted galvanized with an acrylic coat, and 29 and 26 gauge Signature 200 siliconized polyester paint in select colors. Lower gauge numbers mean thicker steel.
The coating standard matters for code. The 2021 IRC, Table R905.10.3(2), sets minimum corrosion resistance at ASTM A792 AZ50 for 55 percent aluminum-zinc (Galvalume) steel and ASTM A653 G-90 for galvanized steel. Union’s MasterRib page does not state the zinc weight of its unpainted galvanized option, so ask the supplier to confirm G-90 or better before using it on a permitted house roof. Our 26 vs 29 gauge metal roofing comparison covers the thickness trade-off.
| Option | What it is | Published warranty or limit | Watch-outs | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bare Galvalume Plus | ASTM A792 aluminum-zinc coated steel with clear acrylic coat | 25-year warranty on bare Galvalume MasterRib (PBS Direct listing) | Keep away from treated lumber; Union’s manual says not to install in direct contact with chemically treated lumber | Union product page and manual; PBS Direct |
| Unpainted galvanized (29 ga) | ASTM A653 zinc-coated steel with acrylic coat | Not stated on the MasterRib page | Confirm G-90 coating weight for IRC compliance | Union product page; 2021 IRC Table R905.10.3(2) |
| Signature 200 (SMP) | Siliconized polyester paint over Galvalume | 45-year limited finish warranty on painted panels | 26 ga paint offered in select colors; PBS Direct lists 18 colors in 29 ga and 12 in 26 ga | Union product page; PBS Direct listings |
| PVDF (Kynar 500) | Fluoropolymer paint with stronger fade resistance | Not listed for MasterRib by Union, MBCI or ABC | For PVDF on this profile, McElroy lists 29 ga Kynar 500 colors for Max-Rib | Manufacturer product pages |
Near salt water, read the coating warranty itself. Distance-from-coastline and salt-spray exclusions differ by manufacturer, and the FL42379 report states that accelerated weathering and salt spray are outside its scope. Our Galvalume metal roofing guide explains how the alloy coating behaves.
What is the minimum slope for MasterRib?
All three Cornerstone brands list 3:12 as the minimum recommended slope for MasterRib. Below that, Union’s installation manual says slopes under 3:12 are not recommended, and if one is used, 3/8 inch butyl tape goes along the top of every lap rib without blocking the siphon channel, with a 7/8 inch lap tek screw at 24 inches on center through the rib crown.
The code floor is lower than the manufacturer’s recommendation. The 2021 IRC, Section R905.10.2, sets 3:12 as the minimum for “lapped, nonsoldered-seam metal roofs without applied lap sealant” and 1/2:12 for the same roofs “with applied lap sealant,” applied per the manufacturer’s instructions. The Union Florida evaluation reports FL7271.5-R5 and FL9555.5-R5 likewise cite 1/2:12 under Florida Building Code Section 1507.4.2. Code minimum does not mean warranty coverage, so follow the manufacturer’s lap-sealing detail on any slope under 3:12.
UL ratings for MasterRib
MasterRib carries the three UL listings most insurers and specifiers ask about. MBCI’s 2024 data sheet lists UL 2218 Class 4 impact resistance and UL 580 Class 90 uplift (Construction 560), and points to a separate Class A fire data sheet for UL 790 and UL 263. Union’s installation manual lists UL 790 Class A fire, UL 2218 Class 4 impact and UL 580 Class 90 (Construction 584).
| Test standard | What it measures | MasterRib result | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| UL 580 | Uplift resistance of roof assemblies | Class 90 (Construction 560 at MBCI; 584 at Union) | MBCI data sheet Rev D; Union manual rev. 10/11 |
| UL 2218 | Impact resistance (hail) | Class 4 | MBCI data sheet; Union manual |
| UL 790 | Fire tests of roof coverings | Class A | Union manual; MBCI Class A fire data sheet reference |
| UL 723 (DripStop backing) | Flame spread and smoke of the anti-condensation felt | Listed as UL 723-approved; 20-year adhesion warranty | MBCI data sheet |
A UL listing applies to the tested assembly, so the deck, fasteners and spacing on the job should match the listed construction. Texas coastal work has its own path: the MBCI data sheet cites a Texas Department of Insurance third-party evaluation tied to FL42379.2 for TWIA windstorm coverage.
Florida product approval and wind uplift for MasterRib
The current statewide Florida approval for MasterRib is FL42379, approved December 13, 2023 under the 2023 Florida Building Code, with two roof entries for this panel: FL42379.01 (over 1×4 wood purlins on a deck) and FL42379.02 (directly on plywood). Allowable uplift depends on gauge, deck and screw pattern, and ranges from 61.8 psf to 146 psf. Neither entry is approved for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone.
Product pages print “Florida approved” without the conditions. The installation documents show that the screw pattern, not the panel, sets the rating. On 29 gauge over 15/32 inch plywood, moving from one screw per rib with rows 24 inches apart to two screws per rib with rows 12 inches apart roughly doubles the allowable pressure, from 71.75 psf to 146 psf.
| Approval entry | Panel and deck | Screw pattern | Allowable uplift (factor of safety 2) |
|---|---|---|---|
| FL42379.02-R0 | 29 ga min. on 15/32 in plywood min.; optional 1/4 x 7/8 in lap fastener | Method A: #9 screws 9 in apart (1 per rib), rows 24 in o.c. | 71.75 psf |

Source: FL42379.01-R0 and FL42379.02-R0 installation documents, evaluated by David Eng, PE (Timberlake Cove, LLC), floridabuilding.org. All entries use a #9 by 1.5 inch fastener with sealing washer, list compliance with FBC 2023 Section 1504.3.2 (non-HVHZ), and state that a single layer of existing shingles may remain under the panel where FBC 1511 permits. Older Union approvals written to the 2020 code, FL7271.5-R5 (71 and 114 psf over 1×4 purlins on a deck) and FL9555.5-R5 (minus 36.2 psf on 2×2 wood supports at 48 inches on center), remain on Union’s website. Check the current revision on floridabuilding.org before permitting.
Does screw spacing change where MasterRib is allowed in Florida?
Yes. The FL42379.02 report includes optional prescriptive tables for buildings with a mean roof height of 30 feet or less, built from ASCE 7-22. They assign Method A or Method B by basic wind speed and roof zone. In open terrain (Exposures B, C or D), 29 gauge MasterRib on 15/32 inch plywood needs Method B in the corner zone from 120 mph and is not recommended in that zone from 160 mph.
| Basic wind speed | Exposure B: Zone 1 | Exposure B: Zone 2 | Exposure B: Zone 3 | Exposure B, C or D: Zone 1 | Exposure B, C or D: Zone 2 | Exposure B, C or D: Zone 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 120 mph | A | A | A | A | A | B |
| 130 to 140 mph | A | A | A | A | B | B |
| 150 mph | A | A | B | B | B | B |
| 160 mph | A | A | B | B | B | NR |
| 170 to 180 mph | A | B | B | B | B | NR |
| 190 to 200 mph | B | B | B | B | NR | NR |
Source: FL42379.02-R0, load tables for flat roofs or gable and hip roofs up to 12:12, mean roof height 30 feet or less, 29 ga panel on 15/32 inch plywood. A = Method A (1 screw per rib, rows 24 in o.c.); B = Method B (2 screws per rib, rows 12 in o.c.); NR = not recommended under these tables. Broadly, Zone 1 is the roof field, Zone 2 the perimeter and Zone 3 the corners, following ASCE 7 roof zones. The report says the tables are one optional path; a licensed design professional can calculate project-specific pressures instead.
The practical takeaway: a Florida MasterRib quote should name the approval number and the screw pattern in the edge and corner zones, not only in the field. Our Florida roof replacement cost guide shows how wind-zone requirements show up in total project price. Union’s 2011 manual also lists a Miami-Dade NOA (07-0713.03); NOAs expire, so any HVHZ project needs a current NOA confirmed with the permit office.
How to install master rib metal roofing
MasterRib goes on over open purlins at 2 feet on center maximum, over a solid deck with underlayment, or over existing shingles with underlayment, according to Union’s installation manual. The manual calls for a 1-1/2 inch double-washered wood screw in the flat of the panel at every purlin, two screws per rib at eaves, ridges and endlaps, and one per rib at intermediate supports.
- Store and handle the panels dry. Union says to break the shipping bands, store sheets on end or on an incline of at least 8 inches, keep them off the ground, and never cover them with plastic, because trapped moisture causes white rust under the paint.
- Square the first panel. Union uses the 3-4-5 triangle method to set a square reference line from the eave, then snaps check lines about every 10 feet so the crew can confirm square as panels go on.
- Prepare the substrate. On open framing, keep purlins at 2 feet on center maximum. On a deck or over shingles, lay synthetic underlayment first. Union advises against direct-to-frame installs over heated spaces unless insulation and a moisture barrier are used. Our felt vs synthetic underlayment guide compares the options.
- Set eave trim and closures. Fasten eave trim with pancake screws, run butyl tape about 1 inch up from the drip edge face, set inside closures on the tape, and add tube sealant on top of the closures. Overhang the panel at least 1 inch past the eave trim.
- Lay panels against the prevailing wind. Metal Sales’ Classic Rib installation guide, written for the same 3/4 inch rib profile, says to install panels against the prevailing wind; confirm the direction on the sheet-laying diagram for your brand. Union’s Figure 5 shows the sequence when panels are end-lapped: lower and upper panels in the first run, then the next run.
- Fasten through the flats. Use two screws per rib at the eave, ridge and endlaps and one per rib at intermediate supports, or the tighter pattern your product approval requires in edge and corner zones. Drive each screw until the washer compresses; Union warns that overdriving dimples the panel and collects water.
- Seal laps where needed. Below 3:12, add 3/8 inch butyl tape along each lap rib, keep the siphon channel clear, and stitch the side lap with a 7/8 inch lap tek screw at 24 inches on center.
- Make endlaps on sealant. Union lists a 6 inch minimum endlap (12 inches on slopes under 4:12), tape sealant 3 inches up from the lap edge, a tube sealant bead 1-1/2 inches up, and screws on both sides of each major rib. Runs of 35 feet or more add a second sealant row and pancake screws in the lower panel.
- Finish rakes and ridge. Union overlaps rake trim ends 4 inches and fastens rake trim at 12 inches on center. At the ridge, butyl tape runs across the panel, an outside closure sits on the tape with tube sealant on top, and the ridge trim is screwed through the ribs 18 inches apart.
MasterRib fastener and lap schedule
The schedule below collects the fastener and lap details from Union’s MasterRib manual. Where a Florida approval or engineered design calls for a tighter pattern, that document governs. Our guides to where to screw metal roofing and how many screws per square go deeper on layouts.
| Location | Fastener and spacing | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Panel to wood, intermediate supports | #9 x 1-1/2 in hex head wood screw with washer, in the flat, 1 per rib at every purlin | Union MasterRib manual, Figure 1 and accessories page |
| Panel at eave, ridge and endlaps | Same screw, 2 per rib (both sides of each major rib) | Union MasterRib manual, Figure 1 |
| Side lap (below 3:12) | #14 x 7/8 in lap tek screw at 24 in o.c. in the rib crown, over 3/8 in butyl tape | Union MasterRib manual, Figure 4 |
| Endlap | 6 in minimum (12 in under 4:12), tape sealant plus tube sealant bead | Union MasterRib manual, Panel Endlap Detail |
| Rake trim | Wood screws at 12 in o.c., trim ends lapped 4 in | Union MasterRib manual, Rake detail |
| Eave trim | Pancake head screws at 12 in o.c. | Union MasterRib manual, eave details |
| Ridge trim | Wood screws 18 in apart through the rib, over outside closures on butyl tape | Union MasterRib manual, Ridge detail |
Can MasterRib go over existing shingles?
Often, yes. Union’s manual shows installation over existing shingles with synthetic underlayment as one of three standard options, and both FL42379 entries allow the panel over a single layer of existing roofing where Florida Building Code Section 1511 permits. Local code and the building department decide whether a recover is allowed. Our guide to installing metal roofing over shingles covers furring and ventilation choices.
How much does master rib metal roofing cost?
MasterRib panels in standard finishes run about $0.87 to $1.77 per square foot of coverage at two named suppliers, before trim, screws and waste. PBS Direct lists 29 gauge painted MasterRib at $4.30 per linear foot, or about $1.43 per sq ft at 36 inch coverage. Installed exposed-fastener roofs run about $6 to $10 per sq ft, per our 2026 Roofing Cost Report.
| Panel | Listed price | Per linear ft | Per sq ft of coverage | Per square (100 sq ft) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 29 ga bare Galvalume | $26.00 per 10 ft panel | $2.60 | About $0.87 | About $87 | Classic Metals listing seen October 2026 |
| 29 ga painted, standard color | $31.00 per 10 ft panel | $3.10 | About $1.03 | About $103 | Classic Metals listing seen October 2026 |
| 29 ga bare Galvalume | $34.00 per 10 ft panel | $3.40 | About $1.13 | About $113 | PBS Direct listing seen October 2026 |
| 29 ga painted | $43.00 per 10 ft panel | $4.30 | About $1.43 | About $143 | PBS Direct listing seen October 2026 |
| 26 ga bare Galvalume | $43.00 per 10 ft panel | $4.30 | About $1.43 | About $143 | PBS Direct listing seen October 2026 |
| 26 ga painted | $53.00 per 10 ft panel | $5.30 | About $1.77 | About $177 | PBS Direct listing seen October 2026 |
| 26 ga Copper Metallic | $78.00 per 10 ft panel | $7.80 | About $2.60 | About $260 | PBS Direct listing seen October 2026 |
Per-square-foot and per-square figures are Roofing Brief arithmetic: the listed price divided by panel length, then divided by 3 feet of coverage, then multiplied by 100. Shipping, cut charges and local tax are excluded; PBS Direct adds a $2 cut charge for custom lengths under 4 feet.
What does a master rib roof cost installed?
For installed cost, this guide uses the $6 to $10 per square foot range for exposed-fastener metal from our 2026 Roofing Cost Report. On a 1,500 square foot roof that is about $9,000 to $15,000. The standing seam vs exposed fastener comparison covers how the two systems differ. The panel share is modest: 1,500 sq ft needs 500 linear feet of 36 inch panel, or 550 feet with 10 percent waste, which costs about $2,365 in 29 gauge painted and $2,915 in 26 gauge painted at the PBS Direct prices above (Roofing Brief estimate).
The rest goes to trim, closures, screws, underlayment, tear-off and labor, and those vary more by roof shape than by panel choice. Tighter Florida screw patterns add fasteners and labor, and valleys and hips add trim and cutting waste. For whole-roof metal pricing see our metal roof cost guide; tariff effects on steel panels are tracked in the metal roofing tariff report.
Master Rib vs 5V vs R-panel/PBR vs Pro-Rib vs standing seam
MasterRib sits between 5V and R-panel. It matches R-panel’s 36 inch coverage with shorter 3/4 inch ribs on 9 inch centers, so it reads as a lighter residential rib while still spanning open purlins. 5V covers 24 inches over solid deck, PBR’s 1-1/4 inch ribs carry heavier commercial spans, and standing seam hides its fasteners at a higher price.
| Feature | MasterRib | 5V crimp | R-panel / PBR | Pro-Rib | Standing seam |

Is 29 gauge corrugated metal roofing the same as MasterRib?
Not quite, though stores often shelve them together. Corrugated panels use rounded waves, such as Union’s 2-1/2 inch corrugated with 1/2 inch ribs, while MasterRib uses squared trapezoidal ribs. Both are commonly sold in 29 gauge, the thinner economy option. Our corrugated metal roofing guide covers the wave profiles.
What is the biggest problem with a master rib metal roof?
The weak points of a MasterRib roof are the exposed screws and laps, not the steel. Every screw is a penetration sealed by a rubber washer, and Union’s manual warns that overdriven screws dimple the panel and collect water while missed screws leave open holes. Condensation under the panel and dents in thin 29 gauge steel are the other common complaints.
- Fastener washers: washers age faster than the panel, so periodic inspection and replacement of loose or damaged screws is part of owning any exposed-fastener roof.
- Condensation: over open framing, warm moist air can condense on the panel underside and drip. MBCI and ABC offer MasterRib with factory-applied DripStop felt for this; our DripStop vs CondenStop comparison explains how the backings differ.
- Foot traffic and dents: Union says not to walk on a roof thinner than 29 gauge and, on open framing, to step only on the purlins.
- Low-slope laps: below 3:12 the side laps need butyl tape and stitch screws, or wind-driven water can travel through them.
Which one should you pick?
Pick MasterRib for barns, shops, garages and budget house roofs at 3:12 or steeper where an exposed-fastener look is acceptable. Step to 26 gauge for a house or high-wind site, to standing seam when you want no exposed screws, and check the Florida approval’s screw pattern before quoting a coastal job.
| Your situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pole barn or shop on wood purlins at 2 ft o.c. | 29 ga MasterRib, Galvalume or painted | Lowest material cost; Union lists open framing at 2 ft max purlin spacing |
| House re-roof at 4:12 or steeper over plywood | 26 ga painted MasterRib | Thicker steel and a higher allowable load per span at similar labor |
| Florida house outside the HVHZ | MasterRib under FL42379, fastened to Method B in edge and corner zones where the tables call for it | Method B doubles allowable uplift on 29 ga over plywood (71.75 to 146 psf) |
| Miami-Dade or Broward County (HVHZ) | A panel with a current Miami-Dade NOA, confirmed by the permit office | FL42379 entries are not approved for the HVHZ |
| Porch or addition under 3:12 | Standing seam, or MasterRib only with sealed laps per the manual | Union does not recommend slopes under 3:12 and gives a sealed-lap detail if one is used |
| Farmhouse look over solid deck | 5V crimp | Flatter, traditional look; 24 in coverage |
| Long commercial spans | PBR panel | Taller 1-1/4 in ribs and a purlin-bearing leg |

A master rib metal roof uses MasterRib steel panels, an exposed-fastener profile with 36 inches of coverage and 3/4 inch ribs on 9 inch centers, screwed through the flats into purlins or a solid deck. Union Corrugating, MBCI and ABC, all part of Cornerstone Building Brands, sell it in 29 and 26 gauge with a 3:12 minimum recommended slope.
How long does a Tuff Rib metal roof last?
Tuff-Rib is another name for the same 3/4 inch rib, 36 inch profile, so its life depends on the coating and the screws. Best Buy Metals backs painted Tuff-Rib with a 40-year paint warranty and 30-year fade and chalk warranty, and bare Galvalume with 25 years. Exposed screw washers can need attention long before the steel does.
How do you install master rib metal roofing?
Union’s manual calls for squaring the first panel with the 3-4-5 method, setting eave trim and closures on butyl tape, and fastening through the flats with 1-1/2 inch washered wood screws at every purlin: two per rib at eaves, ridges and endlaps, one per rib elsewhere. Endlaps need 6 inches minimum, or 12 inches on slopes under 4:12.
What is the biggest problem with metal roofs like MasterRib?
On exposed-fastener roofs such as MasterRib, the biggest problem is the screws. Each one is a penetration sealed by a rubber washer that ages faster than the steel, and overdriven or missed screws can leak. Condensation under panels on open framing and dents in thin 29 gauge steel are the other common issues; factory DripStop backing addresses condensation.
How much does MasterRib metal roofing cost?
At October 2026 listings, MasterRib runs about $2.60 to $5.30 per linear foot: Classic Metals lists 29 gauge Galvalume at $26 per 10 foot panel, and PBS Direct lists 26 gauge painted at $53 per 10 feet. With 36 inch coverage that is about $0.87 to $1.77 per square foot for panels alone; installed exposed-fastener roofs run about $6 to $10 per square foot, per our 2026 Roofing Cost Report.
Is MasterRib approved in Florida?
Yes, outside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone. Cornerstone’s FL42379 approval, issued under the 2023 Florida Building Code, covers the Master Rib panel in 29 and 26 gauge on plywood or on 1×4 purlins, with allowable uplift from 61.8 to 146 psf depending on deck and screw pattern.
