Yes, you can paint gutters, but whether you should depends on the metal. Aluminum and galvanized steel gutters take paint well when you clean them, remove chalk, and use a primer the paint maker names for that metal. Vinyl gutters can only go the same color or lighter. Copper should be left alone. Below are the data-sheet prep rules for each material and the paint and cost math for a typical 150 foot gutter system.

This page covers the painting job itself. If you are still choosing a color, start with our gutter color chart and matching rules. For one popular shade in depth, see the bronze gutter color guide.
Painting gutters: key numbers at a glance
These are the figures most people want before they buy a gallon of anything. Each one comes from a paint maker data sheet, a trade association, a dated cost source or Roofing Brief arithmetic shown later on this page. Prices are public listings checked on October 13, 2026, and they change often.

Can you paint gutters? It depends on the material
You can paint aluminum and galvanized steel gutters, you can paint vinyl gutters only in a color no darker than the original, and you should not paint copper. The difference comes from the surface: aluminum and zinc need oil, oxide and chalk removed before primer will grip, vinyl moves with heat, and copper is meant to weather. The table maps each material to the prep and primer its paint maker names.
| Gutter material | Paint it? | Prep the data sheets call for | Primer the paint makers name | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminum, factory painted (most gutters) | Yes | Wash off dirt, mildew and chalk; dull glossy areas; apply a test area and check adhesion before the full job | Spot-prime any bare metal. Sherwin-Williams points large pre-finished metal surfaces to its DTM Bonding Primer; PPG lists Seal Grip 17-921XI for aluminum | Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond PDS; PPG Permanizer 759-10 PDS (8/2024) |
| Aluminum, bare mill finish | Yes | Remove all oil, grease, dirt and oxide per SSPC-SP1 solvent cleaning | Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Universal Primer; Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Aluminum Primer | Sherwin-Williams Pro-Cryl PDS (2/2026); Rust-Oleum TDS SRT-12 |
| Galvanized steel | Yes, after weathering or a passed test patch | Weather 6 months, solvent clean per SSPC-SP1, test patch if chromate or silicate treated; remove white rust | Pro-Cryl; Benjamin Moore Super Spec HP P04; Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Aluminum Primer. No alkyd straight onto zinc | Sherwin-Williams; Benjamin Moore P04 TDS; Rust-Oleum galvanized FAQ |
| Vinyl (PVC) | Yes, same color or lighter | Scrub with warm soapy water and rinse; paint only sound, properly installed vinyl | Usually none with an acrylic topcoat; prime pitted or porous vinyl (Benjamin Moore suggests Fresh Start 046) | Sherwin-Williams vinyl warping guidance; Benjamin Moore vinyl guide |
| Copper | Not recommended | If painting anyway: remove oil, grease, dirt and oxide by hand tool cleaning per SSPC-SP2 | Benjamin Moore Corotech Waterborne Bonding Primer V175 lists copper | Copper Development Association handbook; Sherwin-Williams surface prep guide |
Not sure what you have? Hold a magnet to the gutter. A magnet sticks to galvanized steel but not to aluminum or copper. Vinyl is plastic you can see at a cut end or downspout joint, and copper shows bare reddish or brown metal wherever it has not turned green.
How do you paint aluminum gutters so the paint does not peel?
Aluminum gutter paint peels when it goes over chalk, dirt or a slick factory finish without a test. Wash the gutters, remove the chalky film that faded factory paint leaves behind, dull any glossy areas, then spot-prime bare metal and run a test patch. Sherwin-Williams tells painters to let a test area dry one week before testing adhesion; PPG uses an overnight masking tape test.
Factory-finished aluminum is a previously painted surface
Most aluminum gutters are formed from coil painted at the mill, so paint makers treat them as previously painted surfaces. The Sherwin-Williams Pro-Cryl data sheet says to clean sound coatings, dull glossy ones by abrading, and let a test area dry one week before checking adhesion.
PPG’s Permanizer sheet says painted aluminum siding “may present potential adhesion problems” and calls for primer, an overnight spot test and a tape pull, with scuff-sanding if the paint lifts. Our gutter coil guide explains which finish your gutters likely carry.
Which primer for aluminum gutters?
Use a water-based acrylic primer that lists aluminum on its data sheet. Sherwin-Williams Pro-Cryl Universal Primer lists steel, galvanized and aluminum and is self-priming on aluminum cleaned per SSPC-SP1. Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Aluminum Primer is a latex base coat “for aluminum or galvanized metal” that accepts latex or oil-based enamel topcoats. Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond Primer also lists aluminum.
One limit matters on bigger jobs. The Extreme Bond data sheet says that for large exterior pre-finished metal surfaces such as siding, painters should use the Sherwin-Williams DTM Bonding Primer instead, a product Sherwin-Williams says is designed for coating pre-finished metal with Kynar (PVDF), silicone polyester or polyester finishes. If your gutters carry a premium PVDF finish, ask the store for that system.
Can you paint galvanized gutters? The weathering rule
You can paint galvanized steel gutters, but fresh zinc rejects most paint. Sherwin-Williams says galvanizing should weather at least six months before coating, PPG says 12 months of exterior weathering, and the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) says the zinc surface is fully weathered after about a year. Before that, clean thoroughly and test a patch. For the material itself, see our galvanized steel gutter guide.
What the American Galvanizers Association says about each surface stage
The AGA sorts galvanized surfaces into three conditions, each with its own prep, and points to ASTM D6386 for the details. The stage depends on how long the zinc has been outdoors. The table below pairs each stage with what it means for a gutter.
| Surface condition | Time outdoors | What the AGA says | What it means for gutters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newly galvanized | Up to 48 hours | Few zinc compounds; smooth, so the surface must be profiled for paint to adhere | Gutter stock usually arrives mill-treated instead, so use the paint maker test patch |
| Partially weathered | About 2 days to 1 year | Zinc oxide and zinc hydroxide build up and must be removed; the most common and most difficult stage to prepare | Gutters in their first year: wait out the weathering period or clean hard and test |
| Fully weathered | About 1 year and older | Zinc carbonate bonds tightly and should be left in place; only mild cleaning is needed | Older gutters: wash, rinse, dry and prime the same day |
The AGA also gives numbers you can use. A mild alkaline wash is 10 parts water to 1 part alkaline cleaner, and a power washer must stay below 1,450 psi so it does not damage the zinc. After rinsing and drying, paint within 12 hours, before new zinc compounds form. AGA guidance and ASTM D6386 are written for hot-dip galvanized steel; sheet gutter stock carries a thinner zinc layer, so follow the paint maker’s test-patch rule as well.
Why oil-based paint fails on galvanized gutters
Alkyd (oil-based) paint reacts with zinc in a process called saponification, which builds a soapy layer under the paint and lets it release over time. Rust-Oleum’s support page explains this and says an oil-based system needs a water-based barrier coat, such as Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3, between the zinc and the alkyd. Its Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer data sheet states plainly: “Do not apply to galvanized steel.”
New galvanized steel can also carry a mill treatment. Benjamin Moore’s Corotech V175 sheet says it “normally comes from the mill chemically treated or passivated” against white rust. Sherwin-Williams calls for a test patch on chromate or silicate treated zinc, and PPG says chromate-sealed galvanizing must be abrasive blasted.
Can you paint vinyl gutters?
You can paint vinyl gutters with exterior acrylic paint, but only in a color the same as or lighter than the original. Paint makers write this rule for vinyl siding, which is the same PVC family: darker paint absorbs more sun, the vinyl overheats, and it can warp for good. That rules out painting vinyl gutters black or dark bronze with standard paint.
The Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Exterior data sheet says not to paint vinyl “with any color darker than the original color or having a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of less than 56 unless VinylSafe Colors are used,” and PPG’s Permanizer sheet repeats the no-darker rule. Sherwin-Williams adds that oil-based coatings are not recommended on vinyl, and that departing from the vinyl maker’s painting guidelines may void that maker’s warranty. Benjamin Moore says to prime pitted or porous vinyl and to avoid painting surfaces that are hot to the touch.
Should you paint copper gutters?
In most cases, no. The Copper Development Association’s design handbook says copper “requires no painting or finishing,” and it describes the natural progression from bright metal to brown and eventually green patina as part of the material’s value. Clear lacquers can hold the bright color for a while, but the handbook says these coatings degrade outdoors and must be periodically stripped and reapplied.
If an HOA or a design plan requires an opaque color, follow the paint makers. Sherwin-Williams’ surface preparation guide says to remove all oil, grease, dirt, oxide and other foreign material from copper by SSPC-SP2 hand tool cleaning. Benjamin Moore’s Corotech Waterborne Bonding Primer V175 lists copper among its substrates. Our copper gutter guide covers how fast the patina actually forms.
How to paint gutters, step by step
Painting gutters takes about ten steps, and most failures happen in the first five, before any paint is opened. The sequence below follows the paint makers’ surface preparation and testing instructions. Plan for a dry stretch of weather, because primers and topcoats have minimum temperatures and recoat times, and the Pro-Cryl primer must be topcoated within 14 days outdoors.
- Identify the material. Use the magnet test above. The material decides the primer, the waiting period and whether you should paint at all.
- Check the warranty and the house age. If the factory finish is peeling within its warranty term, file a claim first. If the house was built before 1978, see the lead safety section before scraping or sanding.
- Clear and wash. Empty the troughs, then wash the outside with a detergent or alkaline cleaner and treat any mildew. Sherwin-Williams says not to use hydrocarbon solvents for cleaning under Pro-Cryl, while Benjamin Moore allows mineral spirits under P04, so follow the sheet for the primer you bought.
- Remove chalk, loose paint and rust. Scrape or brush off anything loose, remove white rust on galvanized steel, and dull glossy factory paint with an abrasive pad. Benjamin Moore’s P04 sheet lists chalk among the contaminants that must come off.
- Rinse and let it dry fully. Rust-Oleum’s primer sheets require dry surfaces at application. On galvanized steel, the AGA says to paint within 12 hours of drying.
- Run a test patch. Prime and topcoat a short section, then check adhesion: overnight with masking tape (PPG) or after one week (Sherwin-Williams). If the paint lifts, abrade more before going further.
- Mask and protect. Cover siding, windows, roof edges and plants. Spraying needs far more masking than a brush or roller.
- Prime. Fully prime bare aluminum and galvanized steel. On sound factory paint, spot-prime bare or abraded spots unless the paint maker calls for a full bonding coat.
- Apply two topcoats of exterior acrylic. Paint the outer face, the bottom and the front lip. Leave the inside of the trough alone: it holds standing water, and primers such as Benjamin Moore P04 are labeled not for immersion service.
- Let it cure, then reinstall. Reattach downspout straps, guards and hangers after the paint has cured, and look for peeling at seams and corners after the first season.
When can you paint gutters? Temperature and recoat windows
Most gutter primers and paints need surface temperatures of at least 35 to 50 degrees F, humidity under about 85 percent, and a surface at least 5 degrees above the dew point. Metal gutters heat up fast in direct sun, so the low end of the range is rarely the problem. The table lists each product’s published window and coverage.
| Product | Use on | Coverage per gallon | Application temperature | Recoat or topcoat time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Universal Primer | Steel, galvanized, aluminum | 160 to 320 sq ft | 35 to 120 F; 85% RH max | 4 hours at 77 F; topcoat within 14 days outdoors | PDS 2/2026 |
| Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond Primer | Aluminum, galvanized, PVC, glossy surfaces | 450 to 500 sq ft | See label | Topcoat within 14 days | PDS 12/2016 |
| Benjamin Moore Super Spec HP Acrylic Metal Primer P04 | Ferrous and galvanized metal | 300 to 400 sq ft | Surface 50 to 95 F | 2 hours at 77 F | TDS 07/2014 |
| Benjamin Moore Corotech Waterborne Bonding Primer V175 | Copper, aluminum, galvanized, brass, stainless | 300 to 400 sq ft | 50 to 90 F; under 85% RH | See label | TDS (Canada), 2021 |
| Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Aluminum Primer | Aluminum, galvanized | 220 to 360 sq ft (55 to 90 per quart) | 50 to 100 F; under 85% RH | Recoat 1 to 3 hours | TDS SRT-12 |
| PPG Pitt-Tech Plus EP Acrylic Primer | Steel, galvanizing, non-ferrous metals | 313 sq ft at 2 mils dry (theoretical) | Surface 40 to 120 F | Dry to handle 1 hour at 70 F | PDS 7/31/2024 |
| Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Exterior | Aluminum, galvanized, vinyl siding | 350 to 400 sq ft | 35 F min; 50 F on large metal expanses | See label | PDS 03/2018 |
| PPG Permanizer Exterior 759-10 | Primed aluminum, vinyl, metal | Up to 400 sq ft | Above 35 F; 50 F on large metal expanses | See label | PDS 8/2024 |

How much paint do you need for gutters?
A typical 150 foot run of 5 inch K-style gutter with four 12 foot downspouts has about 188 square feet of paintable surface, or about 217 square feet per coat once you allow 15 percent for loss. That works out to roughly one gallon of primer for a full prime coat and a little over one gallon of acrylic for two topcoats.
| Step | Arithmetic | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gutter girth (upper bound) | 5 in K-style is formed from 11 3/4 or 11 7/8 in coil; use the full 11.875 in, though the back faces the fascia | 0.99 ft of surface per foot of gutter |
| Gutter area | 150 ft × 0.99 ft | 148 sq ft |
| Downspout area | 4 downspouts × 12 ft = 48 ft of 2 by 3 in pipe; 10 in perimeter = 0.83 ft | 40 sq ft |
| Area per coat with 15% loss | (148 + 40) × 1.15 | About 217 sq ft |
| Primer, one full coat | 217 ÷ 160 to 320 (Pro-Cryl); ÷ 300 to 400 (P04); ÷ 450 to 500 (Extreme Bond) | 0.68 to 1.36 gal; 0.54 to 0.72 gal; 0.43 to 0.48 gal |
| Primer in quarts | 217 ÷ 55 to 90 sq ft per quart (Rust-Oleum Aluminum Primer) | 2.4 to 3.9 qt, so buy 4 |
| Topcoat, two coats | 434 ÷ 350 to 400 (SuperPaint) or ÷ 400 (Permanizer) | 1.09 to 1.24 gal, so buy 2 gallons or 1 gallon plus a quart |
The 15 percent allowance follows Rust-Oleum, whose spray primer data sheet assumes 15 percent material loss, and Sherwin-Williams notes that its spreading rates exclude application loss. Spot priming a sound factory finish uses far less primer, often a quart. Our gutter cost per linear foot page explains downspout spacing if your house has more or fewer than four.
How much does it cost to paint gutters?
For the example house, doing the job yourself costs about $193 to $303 in materials at October 2026 retail listings. Hiring a painter costs about $594 to $1,164 for gutters and downspouts, based on Homewyse’s May 2026 national range of $3.00 to $5.88 per linear foot. This Old House lists a similar $3.00 to $5.75 per linear foot.

DIY, professional or replacement: the 150 foot comparison
Painting costs a fraction of replacement. At matching ends of each range, a painter costs about 43 to 46 percent of new aluminum gutters and downspouts, and a DIY job about 8 to 22 percent. Replacement uses the Roofing Brief rates of $7 to $13 per linear foot for 5 inch aluminum K-style and $7 to $12 for 2 by 3 inch downspouts.
| Option | Arithmetic | Total | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY, budget galvanized system | Cleaner $18.99 + Bulls Eye 1-2-3 $29.98 + 2 gal Permanizer $123.98 + brush $13.99 + tape $5.99 | $192.93 | Listings above; Roofing Brief arithmetic |
| DIY, Rust-Oleum and PPG aluminum system | Cleaner $18.99 + 4 qt aluminum primer $69.92 + 2 gal Permanizer $123.98 + brush $13.99 + tape $5.99 | $232.87 | Listings above; Roofing Brief arithmetic |
| DIY, Sherwin-Williams system | Cleaner $18.99 + Extreme Bond $90.49 + 2 gal SuperPaint $173.98 + brush $13.99 + tape $5.99 | $303.44 | Listings above; Roofing Brief arithmetic |
| Professional painting | 198 linear ft (150 gutter + 48 downspout) × $3.00 to $5.88 | $594 to $1,164 | Homewyse, May 2026 |
| Replace with aluminum | 150 ft × $7 to $13 + 48 ft × $7 to $12 | $1,386 to $2,526 | Roofing Brief cost page |
The DIY totals exclude a ladder, stabilizer and drop cloths, and applying the per-foot painting rate to downspouts is a Roofing Brief assumption. If a field paint job lasts only five years, three repaints by a pro would roughly equal one replacement. Our gutter replacement cost guide has the full replacement breakdown.
Brush, roller or spray paint for gutters?
A brush and a small roller are the practical tools for most homeowners. Sherwin-Williams lists a nylon-polyester brush and a 3/8 inch woven roller cover for Pro-Cryl, and a 3/8 to 3/4 inch nap synthetic roller for SuperPaint. Airless spraying is faster for a crew but needs full masking. Aerosol cans are the wrong tool for a whole house.
Rust-Oleum’s primer spray data sheet lists 10 to 12 square feet per 12 ounce can, so one 217 square foot coat would take 18 to 22 cans, and three coats 54 to 66. At the $11.98 Lowe’s listing for Universal Bonding Primer spray (Oct 13, 2026), the primer coat alone would cost $216 to $264. Keep aerosols for touch-ups and end caps.
Does painting gutters void the factory finish warranty?
The three published coil warranties reviewed here do not say that painting voids coverage, but each covers only defects in its own factory finish, and none pays for fading from normal weathering. That matters, because fading and chalking are the main reasons people paint. Peeling, chipping and cracking of the factory finish are what these warranties cover, so claim those before you pick up a brush.
| Warranty | What it covers | Exclusions that matter for painting |
|---|---|---|
| Englert Rainpro with ScratchGuard | Repaint, repair or replacement of defective seamless aluminum gutters; 50-year prorated coverage for later owners | Uniform fading is not covered; uneven color change “resulting from the use of touch-up paint” is not covered |
| Michigan Aluminum painted coil | Finish will not peel, check, chip or crack; remedy prorated from 100% in year 1 | Uniform fading and color change are not covered |
| Rainstamp painted aluminum | Cracking, peeling or chipping of the original factory finish; 50-year prorated, 100% in year 1 | Normal weathering is excluded; claims are validated “by physical inspection,” which painting over the defect can prevent |
Read the warranty for your own coil brand before painting, since installers and brands write their own terms. Our gutter lifespan guide explains how warranty terms relate to real service life.
How long does paint last on gutters?
No paint maker publishes a service life for field paint on gutters, so every number you see is a rule of thumb. Gutter companies quote repaint cycles of 3 to 5 years (RoofSnap) and 5 to 10 years (LeafGuard). Prep quality, sun exposure and color drive the result: dark colors on south and west sides take the most UV load.
Factory coil finishes are baked on at the mill and carry prorated warranties of up to 50 years on some brands, which a brushed field coat cannot match. If the factory finish is only dull, try a wash that removes the chalk before deciding to paint.
Paint, claim, replace or leave alone? Which one should you pick?
Pick painting when the gutters are sound and you only want a fresh or different color. Pick a warranty claim when the factory finish is peeling within its term. Pick replacement when the gutters leak, sag, are undersized or are rusted through, and leave copper alone. The table matches common situations to the move that fits.
| Your situation | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum gutters faded or chalky, otherwise sound | Wash first; paint if the color is still poor | Coil warranties do not pay for weathering fade; a painter costs 43 to 46% of replacement |
| Factory finish peeling within the warranty term | File a warranty claim before painting | Peel and chip defects are covered; painting can hide the evidence |
| Galvanized gutters under a year old | Wait 6 to 12 months or clean and run a test patch | Sherwin-Williams, PPG and AGA weathering guidance |
| Vinyl gutters you want darker or black | Replace with factory-colored aluminum | Paint makers bar colors darker than the original on vinyl |
| Copper gutters | Let them weather | The CDA says copper requires no painting or finishing |
| Leaks, sagging, rust-through or undersized gutters | Replace | Paint changes appearance, not capacity or seams |
| House built before 1978 with old painted gutters | Hire a lead-safe certified firm or test the paint first | EPA RRP rule applies to paid work disturbing more than 20 sq ft outside |
Lead paint and ladder safety when painting gutters
In homes built before 1978, scraping or sanding old paint can release lead dust, which is why every data sheet cited here carries a lead warning. The EPA renovation rule (40 CFR 745) treats exterior work disturbing 20 square feet or less of painted surface as minor repair; the example gutter system has about 188 square feet. If old painted gutters are on a pre-1978 house, hire a certified renovation firm or test the paint first.
For ladders, OSHA’s construction standard (29 CFR 1926.1053) sets the foot of a leaning ladder about one quarter of its working length out from the top support, the familiar 4 to 1 ratio. Do not lean a ladder on the gutter itself.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth painting gutters?
It is worth it when the gutters are sound and only the color is faded, chalky or wrong. A painter charges about $3.00 to $5.88 per linear foot (Homewyse, May 2026), roughly 43 to 46 percent of the cost of new aluminum gutters at Roofing Brief rates. It is not worth it on gutters that leak, sag or are rusted through, because paint fixes looks, not function.
What kind of paint do you use on gutters?
Use a 100 percent acrylic exterior paint over a primer the paint maker names for your metal. Sherwin-Williams lists Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Universal Primer for aluminum and galvanized steel, Benjamin Moore lists Super Spec HP Acrylic Metal Primer P04 for galvanized metal, and Rust-Oleum sells Stops Rust Aluminum Primer for aluminum or galvanized. Skip oil-based alkyd paint directly on galvanized steel.
How long will painted gutters last?
No paint maker publishes a service life for field paint on gutters, so treat any number as a rule of thumb. Gutter companies quote repaint cycles of about 3 to 5 years (RoofSnap) and 5 to 10 years (LeafGuard). Results depend on prep, sun exposure and color. Factory coil finishes last far longer, which is why some coil warranties run 50 years.
How much does it cost to repaint gutters?
For 150 feet of gutter plus four 12 foot downspouts, a painter at $3.00 to $5.88 per linear foot (Homewyse, May 2026) comes to about $594 to $1,164. Doing it yourself costs about $193 to $303 in cleaner, primer, two gallons of acrylic paint, a brush and tape at October 2026 retail listings, before ladder rental.
Is it cheaper to paint gutters or replace them?
Painting is cheaper. On a 150 foot system with 48 feet of downspout, professional painting runs about $594 to $1,164, while new 5 inch aluminum K-style gutters and 2 by 3 inch downspouts run about $1,386 to $2,526 at Roofing Brief cost-page rates. Replacement wins only when the gutters leak, sag, are undersized or are rusted through.
Can you paint vinyl gutters black?
Not with standard paint. Sherwin-Williams says not to paint vinyl a color darker than the original or with a Light Reflective Value below 56 unless you use its VinylSafe colors, and PPG warns that darker colors may warp vinyl. Black sits far below that limit. If you want black gutters, factory-finished aluminum is the practical route.
Can you paint copper gutters?
You can, but the Copper Development Association says copper requires no painting or finishing, and it notes that clear coatings degrade outdoors and must be stripped and reapplied. Most owners let copper weather to brown and green. If an HOA or design requires paint, Sherwin-Williams calls for hand tool cleaning to remove oxide, and Benjamin Moore lists Corotech V175 bonding primer for copper.
Does painting gutters void the warranty?
The Englert, Michigan Aluminum and Rainstamp coil warranties reviewed for this guide do not say that painting voids coverage, but each covers only defects in its own factory finish, and none covers fading from normal weathering. Englert also excludes uneven color change caused by touch-up paint. If the factory finish is peeling during the warranty term, file a claim before you paint, because painting hides the evidence.
