Short answer: As of October 2026, the five highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Michigan City-La Porte, IN metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Armour Construction (83.5), DMG Exteriors (73.4), Alamo Roofing Contractors (65.6), J&B West Roofing and Construction (64.9), Discount Roof (57.4). Each is certified by a manufacturer whose register we checked by hand, each rating has been tested against a source outside that register, and nobody bought a place on this page.
The Roofing Brief scored 7 certified roofing contractors serving the Michigan City metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top five individually to confirm its record. Lake Michigan loads Michigan City’s roofs twice: lake-effect bands like the 35 inches that fell on the city in January 2024 put La Porte County in Indiana’s 30 psf snow zone with an ice barrier required, and lakeshore supercells like the 7 May 2024 storm dropped 3.5-inch hail on Long Beach and dented cars downtown. Indiana licenses no roofers, but both the city and the county make roofers register, and the county requires a $10,000 bond.
Quick picks for Michigan City:
- Armour Construction: best overall (TRB Score 83.5). Verified services: commercial roofing, storm damage work, siding, gutters.
- DMG Exteriors: best La Porte County coverage (TRB Score 73.4). Verified services: siding, gutters, storm damage work.

Hail, codes and what they cost a Michigan City homeowner
Indiana has no state roofing or general contractor licence, but La Porte County fills the gap. In unincorporated areas roofers must hold a county contractor registration before any permit is issued, with liability insurance of $300,000 per person, workers’ compensation, a $10,000 bond, three references and a sworn statement of no recent felony; the fee is $150. Michigan City separately requires roofers to register with its planning department for $150 a year, with proof of insurance.
Michigan City requires a permit for any reroof, a rule dating from a 1938 ordinance: $40 for the first $1,000 plus $10 per $1,000 and $45 per inspection, about $180 plus inspections on a $15,000 job, doubled if work starts first except after storm damage. Unincorporated La Porte County and the City of La Porte each charge a flat $50 for a residential reroof permit.
Indiana bars a roofer from advertising, offering or promising to pay or rebate any part of your insurance deductible and from acting as your public adjuster. You can cancel before midnight on the third business day after the later of signing or receiving the insurer’s written final coverage decision, with a refund within ten days.
Indiana’s code table puts La Porte County at a 30 psf ground snow load with an ice barrier required from the eave to at least 24 inches inside the wall, one of the northern counties where it is mandatory. The housing is old: about half of Michigan City’s and La Porte’s homes predate 1960, and 41.2 percent of Michigan City’s homes are rented.

What we would want clarified. Its own website’s city pages cover only Lake and Porter County towns; La Porte County appears only in its BBB service area, so confirm it will take your job. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (219) 313-3092, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
2. DMG Exteriors: best La Porte County coverage (TRB Score 73.4)
DMG Exteriors is based in Valparaiso, IN, led by Damien Gass, president, BBB accredited since 6 April 2018, A+ rating, no complaints, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

Best fit for: Michigan City and La Porte homeowners who want a Master Elite firm that names their town, especially after hail.
What we would want clarified. It is based in Valparaiso, outside the metro, and only one dated source gives its founding year. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Best fit for: Long Beach and Trail Creek homeowners who want a Master Elite option and will check its record first.
What we would want clarified. BBB rates it B- and it left an October 2025 complaint unanswered; complaints are allegations, not findings. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Best fit for: Michigan City homeowners who want a large local firm based in the city with two manufacturer credentials.
What we would want clarified. BBB records seven complaints in three years, two in the last 12 months, including a May 2026 dispute over whether all contracted items were installed; all were answered. Roof replacement and repair in Michigan City, IN
Short answer: In Michigan City, start with Armour Construction, the region’s only President’s Club roofer; DMG Exteriors for the fullest La Porte County coverage; Alamo Roofing Contractors for the lakeshore towns; J&B West, the only ranked firm based in La Porte County; or Discount Roof for metal roofing. The rule that matters most: Michigan City requires a permit for any reroof and requires roofers to register with its planning department each year.
Lake Michigan loads these roofs twice. Lake-effect bands bring heavy snow: on 19 and 20 January 2024 a dominant band dropped 35.0 inches at Michigan City and 28 inches near La Porte, and the LaPorte station averages 65.2 inches a year. Indiana’s code puts La Porte County at a 30 psf ground snow load with an ice barrier required from the eave to at least 24 inches inside the wall. Summer brings hail: on 7 May 2024 a lakeshore supercell dropped 3.5 inch hail at Long Beach and 3.0 inches at Trail Creek, producing every 2 inch or larger hail report the county logged in the decade, with hail damage to vehicles in downtown Michigan City.
Wind brings its own damage. On 20 May 2024 a microburst of 70 to 90 mph near Stillwell and Union Mills peeled a barn roof; on 15 July 2024 an EF1 south of Waterford snapped hundreds of trees, damaging homes; and on 30 March 2025 gusts near Tracy blew a roof off and put trees into houses around Fish Lake. The housing is old, with about half of Michigan City’s and La Porte’s homes predating 1960. Under the 2020 Indiana Residential Code, a roof replacement must tear off to the deck, and a recover is not allowed over a water soaked or deteriorated roof, over slate, clay, cement or asbestos-cement tile, or where two or more layers already exist.
Michigan City requires a permit for any reroof: $40 for the first $1,000 plus $10 per $1,000 and $45 per inspection, about $180 plus inspections on a $15,000 job, doubled if work starts first except after storm damage. Unincorporated La Porte County and the City of La Porte each charge a flat $50. Indiana licenses no roofers, but Michigan City requires registration for $150 a year with proof of insurance, and the county requires a registration with a $10,000 bond. Indiana bars a roofer from paying or rebating any part of your insurance deductible and from acting as your public adjuster, and you can cancel before midnight on the third business day after the later of signing or receiving the insurer’s written final coverage decision.
Armour Construction covers residential and commercial roofing, storm damage, siding, gutters and copper work, but its website’s city pages cover only Lake and Porter County towns, so confirm it will take your job. DMG Exteriors names Michigan City, La Porte and other La Porte County towns and offers storm restoration. Alamo Roofing Contractors does roof replacement and storm repair but carries a B- BBB rating with an unanswered complaint. J&B West, headquartered in Michigan City, does roof replacement and repair with the most reviews in the pool. Discount Roof offers residential roof replacement plus metal and commercial roofing.

What 3.5 inch hail does to a Michigan City roof
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Michigan City-La Porte, IN statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 29 hail reports, 69 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 4 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $754,000; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Michigan City in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 May 2024 | 3.5 in | Long Beach | La Porte |
| 7 May 2024 | 3.0 in | Trail Creek | La Porte |
| 7 May 2024 | 2.5 in | Long Beach | La Porte |
| 7 May 2024 | 2.5 in | Duneland Beach | La Porte |
| 7 May 2024 | 2.0 in | Trail Creek | La Porte |
| 7 May 2024 | 1.75 in | Michigan City | La Porte |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 7 May 2024 near Long Beach, measured at 3.5 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 78 knots, about 90 mph, near Union Mills on 20 May 2024. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
Tornadoes. 4 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF1 near Waterford on 15 July 2024.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 20 May 2024 event near Union Mills, reproduced verbatim:
A transmission tower downed and a small grain silo was crumpled and blown across the road. Photo relayed by broadcast media on Facebook, near US 6 and S 400 W.
That account is the design case for a roof here, and it comes from the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in March (31), May (29), July (17). The worst years on record were 2024 (27), 2025 (15), 2016 (12). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Michigan City, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.
Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.
What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Michigan City. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.
Lake Michigan’s double load: lake-effect snow and lakeshore supercells
The LaPorte weather station averages 65.2 inches of snow a year, more than three times central Indiana’s, and most of it comes in narrow lake-effect bands. On 19 and 20 January 2024 a dominant band dropped 1 to 3 feet across northern La Porte County at 2 to 3 inches an hour, with 35.0 inches recorded at Michigan City and 28 inches near La Porte.
Those bands recur. From 3 to 6 January 2018 lake-effect snow piled up to 25 inches near La Porte; on 31 December 2017 a single band dropped 14 inches at 2 to 3 inches an hour and whiteouts caused a Toll Road crash involving at least 20 vehicles; and the December 2022 blizzard brought 14 inches with 50 mph gusts. That is why Indiana’s code puts the county in its 30 psf snow zone and makes an ice barrier mandatory.
Summer brings the other load. Between 2:20 and 2:26 pm on 7 May 2024 a supercell over the lakeshore produced every 2-inch-or-larger hail report the county logged in the decade: 3.5 inches at Long Beach, 3.0 and 2.0 inches at Trail Creek and 2.5 inches at Duneland Beach, with hail damage to vehicles in downtown Michigan City.
Wind follows. On 20 May 2024 a microburst of 70 to 90 mph near Stillwell and Union Mills downed five transmission towers, threw a grain silo across a road and peeled a barn roof. On 15 July 2024 an EF1 tornado south of Waterford snapped hundreds of trees, damaging homes, and on 30 March 2025 gusts near Tracy blew a roof off and put trees into houses around Fish Lake.
For a lakeshore roof that means specifying for both: confirm the ice barrier and ventilation that control ice dams, ask about impact-resistant shingles after the 2024 hail, and in Michigan City or unincorporated La Porte County make sure the roofer is registered, since the county’s registration carries a bond that the state does not require.

What a Michigan City homeowner should ask for in writing
There is no state roofing licence in IN. Indiana issues no state roofing or general contractor licence. The state licenses only a few building trades, such as plumbing contractors, elevator contractors and manufactured home installers, so there is no state roofing exam, no state roofing licence number and no state board that can discipline a roofer.
Regulation is municipal. In Indianapolis the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services requires general contractors, roofers included, to be listed, which takes a $10,000 surety bond, insurance certificates and an orientation; the listing covers Marion County outside the excluded cities of Lawrence, Beech Grove, Speedway and Southport, which run their own requirements. Other cities set their own rules, from bonded registration to none at all.
That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.
Check here: Indianapolis Business and Neighborhood Services contractor licensing. Indiana has no state roofing or general contractor licence, so licensing is entirely municipal and county level, and it varies sharply between neighbouring jurisdictions. Ask which city or county licence the contractor holds for the jurisdiction your house actually sits in, and confirm it with that building department rather than accepting a licence issued elsewhere in the state as proof.
For what a full replacement costs across Indiana, including state labor rates and permit rules, see our Indiana roof replacement cost guide.
Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.
The shape of the Michigan City contractor market
7 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Michigan City-La Porte, IN statistical area, of which 1 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 1,945 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.657. The statistical area had a 2024 population of 111,348, a change of -0.95% against the 2020 census base, per the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates.

How these Michigan City rankings were produced
Every contractor in the Michigan City-La Porte, IN pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 7 certified contractors, of whom 1 hold President’s Club standing and 2 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.657. The top five were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Anything unflattering that research surfaced appears above alongside the rest, and no company bought its position.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Questions Michigan City homeowners ask
Who is the best roofer in Michigan City, IN?
Armour Construction of Valparaiso, IN scores highest in the Michigan City metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score, at 83.5 out of 100 as of October 2026. It holds President’s Club certification with a 4.9 rating across 107 reviews. Highest-scoring is not the same as best fit for your specific job, and the four companies behind it score within 26.1 points.
What is the 25% rule for roofing in Indiana?
Indiana has no 25 percent roof rule. The 2020 Indiana Residential Code, the 2018 IRC with state amendments, does not change the reroofing section R908, so a roof replacement must tear off to the deck. A recover is not allowed over a water soaked or deteriorated roof, over slate, clay, cement or asbestos-cement tile, or where two or more layers already exist.

Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?
No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on the top five.
What was the worst hailstorm in Michigan City in the last ten years?
The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Michigan City-La Porte, IN statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 3.5 inches, reported near Long Beach on 7 May 2024. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired. Across the decade the metro recorded 29 hail reports. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $754,000; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.
When is the worst time of year for roof damage in Michigan City?
Severe-weather reports in the Michigan City-La Porte, IN statistical area cluster in March, May, July, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Booking non-urgent roof work outside those months usually means shorter lead times, because local crews are not simultaneously triaging storm callouts.
Do roofers need a licence in IN?
What should I check before hiring a roofer in Michigan City?
Indiana has no state roofing or general contractor licence, so licensing is entirely municipal and county level, and it varies sharply between neighbouring jurisdictions. Ask which city or county licence the contractor holds for the jurisdiction your house actually sits in, and confirm it with that building department rather than accepting a licence issued elsewhere in the state as proof.
Lake Michigan’s double load: lake-effect snow and lakeshore supercells?
The LaPorte weather station averages 65.2 inches of snow a year, more than three times central Indiana’s, and most of it comes in narrow lake-effect bands. On 19 and 20 January 2024 a dominant band dropped 1 to 3 feet across northern La Porte County at 2 to 3 inches an hour, with 35.0 inches recorded at Michigan City and 28 inches near La Porte.
Is Michigan City a hard market to find a good roofer in?
Lake Michigan loads Michigan City’s roofs twice: lake-effect bands like the 35 inches that fell on the city in January 2024 put La Porte County in Indiana’s 30 psf snow zone with an ice barrier required, and lakeshore supercells like the 7 May 2024 storm dropped 3.5-inch hail on Long Beach and dented cars downtown. Indiana licenses no roofers, but both the city and the county make roofers register, and the county requires a $10,000 bond.
Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Michigan City?
Wind, by a wide margin. The Michigan City-La Porte, IN statistical area logged 69 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 24 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
