How step and counter flashing on a chimney are supposed to work

Step and counter flashing is a two-layer system: step flashing tucks under each shingle course and turns up the chimney wall, and counter flashing is set into a cut mortar joint (a reglet) and folds down over the step flashing to cap it. The step pieces move water off the roof; the counter flashing keeps water from getting behind them at the wall. Neither works alone, which is why a single continuous metal strip or a caulk bead fails.

The reason this design lasts is that it is not sealed shut. The counter flashing overlaps the step flashing like shingles, so the joint sheds water by gravity and lets the two surfaces move independently without tearing. When a roofer skips the step flashing and relies on a bead of sealant, the joint has no mechanical overlap, and the caulk becomes the only thing holding back water. Caulk has a service life of a few years; a properly lapped step and counter flashing joint can run 20 years or more.

When a chimney needs a cricket or saddle

A cricket (also called a saddle) is a small peaked structure built on the upslope side of a chimney to split water around it instead of letting it pond and dump against the back flashing.
