Best Roofers in Redding, CA: 3 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Best Roofers in Redding, CA: 3 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026, the three highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Redding, CA metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are ABC Roofing & Solar (71.6), Hunter Roofing (71.4), MM Hernandez Roofing (55.5). Each is certified by a manufacturer whose register we checked by hand, each rating has been tested against a source outside that register, and nobody bought a place on this page.

The Roofing Brief scored 3 certified roofing contractors serving the Redding metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top three individually to confirm its record. Redding is a wildfire roof market. In July 2018 the Carr Fire destroyed 1,079 homes in and around the city, and a fire whirl inside it, with winds above 143 mph, collapsed a roof on three people in western Redding; the Zogg Fire followed in 2020. California licenses every roofer, and here the roof class on a reroof depends on the parcel’s fire hazard mapping. Four certified firms appear in the directory; one publishes no coverage of Redding, so three are ranked, and five long-licensed local roofers are listed.

What actually ages a Redding roof

California requires a Contractors State License Board licence for any job of $1,000 or more, and a reroof never qualifies for the small-job exemption because it needs a permit. Roofing is the C-39 classification, its qualifier must show four years of trade experience, and every C-39 holder must carry workers’ compensation whether or not it has employees, plus a $25,000 bond. A home solicitation contract can be cancelled until midnight on the third business day, or the fifth for a senior.

The fire rules decide the roof. The 2025 California Residential Code sends roofs in fire hazard severity zones and wildland-urban interface areas to the state’s Wildland-Urban Interface Code, which requires a Class A roof when half or more is replaced within a year; elsewhere a replacement of more than half needs at least Class C. Which applies depends on your parcel’s mapping, which we could not confirm for Redding’s neighbourhoods, so ask the roofer and the city before choosing a product.

Redding, Anderson, Shasta Lake and the valley towns are all in Climate Zone 11, so a reroof of half or more must also meet the cool-roof rule: 0.20 aged solar reflectance for a steep slope, unless an insulation exception applies. The city reached an all-time record of 119 degrees at its airport on 6 July 2024. We could not reach the City of Redding’s permit and fee pages.

Hail is rare but can be large: of eight hail reports in Shasta County from 2016 to 2025, six came from one unusually cold storm on 24 May 2019 that dropped oblong stones up to three inches over Redding, near-record size for California, damaging an estimated 3,000 cars. On 21 December 2025 a convergence zone dropped up to seven inches of rain in nine hours, damaging more than 170 buildings. Shasta County’s median home was built in 1982, and 45.2 percent of homes in Redding are rented.

1. ABC Roofing & Solar — TRB Score 71.6

ABC Roofing & Solar is based in Redding, CA, in business since 2001, led by Carl Hawkins, owner and qualifier, BBB accredited since 20 September 2018, A+ rating, one complaint closed in three years, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

  • ABC Roofing & Solar accredited since 20 September 2018 with an A+ rating, business start March 2001, one complaint closed in three years.. BBB business profile

What they actually do. Roofing, solar installation under an electrical licence, and general contracting.

Why it ranks here. Redding’s established certified roofer: trading since 2001, with the licensing board and BBB agreeing, holding roofing, general building and electrical classifications, which lets it handle a roof and rooftop solar together, and Master Elite certification.

Best fit for: Reroofs combined with rooftop solar.

What we would want clarified. Its 4.4 rating across 55 reviews is the lowest of the three, and BBB shows one complaint in three years. It is a general contractor as well as a roofer. Its licence renews on 31 October 2026, so confirm the renewal. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (530) 605-3400, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

2. Hunter Roofing — TRB Score 71.4

Hunter Roofing is based in Redding, CA, led by Daniel Hunter, sole owner, BBB no BBB profile found, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

Score component Points Max
Certification tier 12 35
Adjusted rating 36.4 40

  • Daniel Hunter was also listed from 2003 on River City Roofing Company, licence 819725, which was revoked after citations between December 2008 and March 2009 for non-compliance.. CSLB personnel and disclosure records

What they actually do. Residential roofing.

Why it ranks here. A perfect 5.0 across 47 reviews from a Redding roofer holding a clean C-39 licence in its owner’s name.

Best fit for: Residential reroofs where the homeowner has checked the licence history.

What we would want clarified. Its current licence dates only from December 2024. Its owner was listed on an earlier Redding roofing licence, River City Roofing Company, which the board revoked after citations in 2008 and 2009 went uncomplied with; those are final board records about the earlier licence, not findings against this one. It has no BBB profile and only a post office box address. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (530) 999-5622, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

3. MM Hernandez Roofing — TRB Score 55.5

MM Hernandez Roofing is based in Shingletown, CA, in business since 2024, led by Martin Hernandez Trujillo, qualifier, Not accredited; A- rating; no complaints, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

Score component Points Max

  • Not accredited, A- rating, no complaints and no reviews.. BBB business profile

What they actually do. Roofing.

Why it ranks here. A small roofing company in Shingletown, inside Shasta County, with a clean C-39 licence and a perfect 5.0 across six reviews.

Best fit for: Foothill homeowners east of Redding who want a small roofing-only firm.

What we would want clarified. It is very new, licensed only since October 2024, with six reviews, no website and no published service area. BBB rates it A- without giving a reason. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Other licensed roofers serving Redding

Three certified firms are ranked here. These five hold active C-39 roofing licences on the state register with clean records, and are based in Shasta County. They are not scored and we are not recommending them. We left out one Owens Corning firm whose licence is suspended after its bond and workers’ compensation were cancelled.

8 severe weather reports in a decade, and why that matters in Redding

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Redding, CA statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 8 hail reports, 1 severe thunderstorm and high wind report and 0 tornadoes. The database’s property-damage fields are left blank for most of these reports, so it carries no usable loss total for this metro and we do not quote one.

The biggest hail to fall on Redding in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
24 May 2019 3.0 in Enterprise Shasta
24 May 2019 2.5 in Enterprise Shasta
24 May 2019 1.75 in Project City Shasta
24 May 2019 1.75 in Enterprise Shasta
24 May 2019 1.5 in Enterprise Shasta
9 August 2017 1.0 in Old Station Shasta

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 24 May 2019 near Enterprise, measured at 3.0 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 50 knots, about 58 mph, near Shasta on 24 May 2019. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 24 May 2019 event near Enterprise, reproduced verbatim:

There were numerous reports of large hail across the Redding area, including a photo of hail from the family of an NWS employee showing oblong hail as large as 3 inches in diameter. Hail this size is rare in California and is near record size. Many cars were dented or had back windows or windshields broken. A preliminary estimate of damage to hail is based on a KRCR story of up to 3000 cars damaged and a national average of $2500 for damage repairs (Auto Trends). This works out to rough estimated of around $7.5 million for auto damage alone. Some building damage was also reported, including the Northern California Geographic Area Coordination Center, which suffered damage to a new roof.

That account is the design case for a roof here, and it comes from the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in May (7), September (1), August (1). The worst years on record were 2019 (7), 2017 (2). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Redding, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Redding. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

The Carr Fire and its fire whirl

The Carr Fire began on the afternoon of 23 July 2018 at Highway 299 and Carr Powerhouse Road near French Gulch, reportedly when a trailer’s blown tyre let its steel rim scrape the pavement and spark dry vegetation. By containment on 30 August it had burned 229,651 acres, destroyed 1,079 homes, 22 commercial buildings and 503 outbuildings, forced about 38,000 people from their homes, and killed eight, three of them firefighters. NWS cites insured building losses of about $1.5 billion.

On the evening of 26 July the fire generated a fire whirl in western Redding with winds estimated above 143 mph, the equivalent of an EF3 tornado, along a two-mile path about half a mile wide. NWS recorded that three people were killed inside their home after its walls were blown out and the roof collapsed on them, that several other homes had significant roof damage, and that the wind damage reached areas the fire never touched.

Because NOAA files the whirl as a high wind event for the valley forecast zone, Shasta County’s own wind count for the decade shows a single report, none severe. The county record badly understates what Redding roofs have faced.

Fire returned in 2020. The Zogg Fire started on Zogg Mine Road north of Igo on 27 September, killed four people and destroyed 204 structures. Federal disaster declarations followed both years, and further fires burned to the north at Delta and Hirz.

For a Redding homeowner that makes the fire class the first question on any reroof: is the parcel in a hazard zone, and if so is the whole assembly rated Class A? The second is the cool-roof rule, which a Class A product rated for reflectance can satisfy at the same time. Ask too about ember-resistant vents and gutter guards, which the wildland code addresses.

The checks worth making in Redding

Licensing is required in CA. California requires a Contractors State License Board licence for any job where labour and materials combined reach $1,000 or more, a threshold raised from $500 by Assembly Bill 2622 on 1 January 2025. The exemption never covers a reroof: under Business and Professions Code 7048 it applies only to minor work under $1,000 that needs no building permit, and is lost if the person employs anyone or advertises as a contractor. Roofing is the C-39 classification. A B General Building contractor may include roofing in a multi-trade project, but a stand-alone reroof needs a C-39 licence or a licensed roofing subcontractor (B&P 7057).

A C-39 qualifier must document at least four years of journey-level experience and normally passes both a trade examination and a law and business examination unless a statutory waiver applies. Every active licence carries a $25,000 contractor’s bond, and C-39 roofing licensees must carry workers’ compensation whether or not they have employees: roofing is one of the few classifications that cannot file the no-employee exemption.

Check here: CSLB Check a License. The CSLB record also shows complaint and disciplinary history, including citations and accusations. Treat any status other than Active as disqualifying.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How many certified roofers Redding actually has

3 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Redding, CA statistical area, of which 0 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 108 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.825. How these Redding rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Redding, CA pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 3 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 1 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.825. The top three were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Anything unflattering that research surfaced appears above alongside the rest, and no company bought its position.

Set aside in Redding. A contractor that would otherwise have scored into the top three was removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.

  • Kingdom Roofing, which scored 64.8: Excluded on service area, not on quality: its C-39 licence and BBB record are clean, but it is based in Red Bluff, Tehama County, outside the Redding metro, its BBB service area is the Red Bluff region, and we found no published statement that it serves Redding.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Common questions about roofers in Redding

Who is the best roofer in Redding, CA?

ABC Roofing & Solar of Redding, CA scores highest in the Redding metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score, at 71.6 out of 100 as of October 2026. It holds Master Elite certification with a 4.4 rating across 55 reviews. Highest-scoring is not the same as best fit for your specific job, and the two companies behind it score within 16.1 points.

How many certified roofing contractors serve Redding?

3 contractors on the GAF certification registry serve the principal cities of the Redding, CA statistical area as of October 2026, of which 0 hold President’s Club status.

How much damaging hail does Redding get?

The Redding, CA statistical area recorded 7 hail reports of 1 inch or larger and 2 of 2 inches or larger between 2016 and 2025 in the NOAA Storm Events Database. The largest hailstone reported measured 3.0 inches.

Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?

No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on the top three.

What was the worst hailstorm in Redding in the last ten years?

The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Redding, CA statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 3.0 inches, reported near Enterprise on 24 May 2019. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired. Across the decade the metro recorded 8 hail reports. The database’s property-damage fields are left blank for most of these reports, so it carries no usable loss total for this metro and we do not quote one.

When is the worst time of year for roof damage in Redding?

Severe-weather reports in the Redding, CA statistical area cluster in May, September, August, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Booking non-urgent roof work outside those months usually means shorter lead times, because local crews are not simultaneously triaging storm callouts.

Do roofers need a licence in CA?

California requires a Contractors State License Board licence for any job where labour and materials combined reach $1,000 or more, a threshold raised from $500 by Assembly Bill 2622 on 1 January 2025. The exemption never covers a reroof: under Business and Professions Code 7048 it applies only to minor work under $1,000 that needs no building permit, and is lost if the person employs anyone or advertises as a contractor. Every active licence carries a $25,000 contractor’s bond, and C-39 roofing licensees must carry workers’ compensation whether or not they have employees: roofing is one of the few classifications that cannot file the no-employee exemption.

What should I check before hiring a roofer in Redding?

The CSLB record also shows complaint and disciplinary history, including citations and accusations. Treat any status other than Active as disqualifying.

The Carr Fire and its fire whirl?

The Carr Fire began on the afternoon of 23 July 2018 at Highway 299 and Carr Powerhouse Road near French Gulch, reportedly when a trailer’s blown tyre let its steel rim scrape the pavement and spark dry vegetation. By containment on 30 August it had burned 229,651 acres, destroyed 1,079 homes, 22 commercial buildings and 503 outbuildings, forced about 38,000 people from their homes, and killed eight, three of them firefighters. NWS cites insured building losses of about $1.5 billion.

Is Redding a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Redding is a wildfire roof market. In July 2018 the Carr Fire destroyed 1,079 homes in and around the city, and a fire whirl inside it, with winds above 143 mph, collapsed a roof on three people in western Redding; the Zogg Fire followed in 2020. California licenses every roofer, and here the roof class on a reroof depends on the parcel’s fire hazard mapping. Four certified firms appear in the directory; one publishes no coverage of Redding, so three are ranked, and five long-licensed local roofers are listed.

Why is Kingdom Roofing not on this list?

Excluded on service area, not on quality: its C-39 licence and BBB record are clean, but it is based in Red Bluff, Tehama County, outside the Redding metro, its BBB service area is the Red Bluff region, and we found no published statement that it serves Redding..
