Hail, codes and what they cost a Lawton homeowner
Oklahoma requires every roofing contractor to register each year with the Construction Industries Board, at $75, with at least $500,000 of liability insurance for residential work and workers’ compensation or an exemption; the registration is suspended the day the liability policy lapses. Commercial roofing has needed an exam-based endorsement since 2015, and from 1 January 2027 residential roofers need one too, by exam or, for those already registered, extra continuing education by 2028. Permit officials must refuse a roofing permit to an unregistered roofer.
From 1 January 2027 unregistered or unendorsed roofing carries fines of up to $5,000 per violation, every job needs a written contract, and registered roofers may not subcontract to unregistered labour crews. On an insurance-funded job you may cancel within 72 hours of written notice that all or part of the claim was denied, and a roofer may not advertise or promise to pay your deductible; it must give you written notice of that rule with its first estimate.
Lawton lists a residential roof permit, and only contractors licensed with the city can request inspections. Door-to-door sellers need a city permit and badge, and the city publishes the list; residents approached by an unbadged seller are told to call the police non-emergency line. Oklahoma’s 2024 residential code took effect on 14 September 2026.
Across 2016 to 2025 Comanche and Cotton counties logged 219 hail reports, the largest 4 inches in Lawton and near Mount Scott, 175 damaging wind reports and 15 tornado segments, but only $882,000 of recorded damage, since most rows carry no estimate. Forecast zones add 44 high wind reports, an October 2020 ice storm and the December 2021 Coombs wildfire, which destroyed five homes. With Fort Sill, 55 percent of Lawton’s homes are rented, and 63.5 percent were built before 1980.

Why it ranks here. A small family roofer from Chickasha, about 40 miles north-east in Grady County and outside the metro, with 14 GAF reviews averaging 4.9 and a clean BBB file since 2020. Its registration is in good standing and its website publishes Lawton and Elgin service pages. BBB and the state agree on a 2018 start; the site’s 30 years refers to the family’s experience.
Best fit for: Lawton and Elgin homeowners with a standard shingle reroof who want a registered family firm with a clean record.
What we would want clarified. It is the only certified firm, based 40 miles away, with a small review base and no commercial endorsement; compare it with the registered Lawton firms below. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (405) 907-2248, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
Other registered roofers serving Lawton
Only one certified firm is ranked here. These five are registered and in good standing with the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board and work from Lawton addresses; four hold the exam-based commercial endorsement. They are not scored and we are not recommending them.

Roof replacement and repair in Lawton, OK
Short answer: In Lawton, the only certified firm in the directory is Lopez & Sons Roofing, a registered family roofer from Chickasha suited to a standard shingle reroof; compare it with registered Lawton firms such as Lockwood and Sons Construction or Keystone Roofing. The rule that matters most: every Oklahoma roofer must register with the Construction Industries Board, and permit officials must refuse a roofing permit to an unregistered roofer.
Hail is the main roof threat in Lawton, which sits in one of Oklahoma’s busiest hail belts. Across 2016 to 2025 Comanche and Cotton counties logged 219 hail reports, 30 of them 2 inches or larger, with the largest stones, 4 inches, falling in Lawton and near Mount Scott. On 15 June 2023 a 4-inch hailstone fell in the city, and six minutes later a spotter measured a 103 mph gust near Sheridan Road and Lee Boulevard, where thunderstorm wind blew the outer layer of roof decking off a two-storey apartment building. The counties also logged 175 damaging wind reports and 15 tornado segments, and forecast zones add 44 high wind reports and an October 2020 ice storm.
Lawton’s housing is old: 63.5 percent of the city’s homes were built before 1980, and with Fort Sill, 55 percent are rented. The city lists a residential roof permit, and only contractors licensed with the city can request inspections. Oklahoma’s 2024 residential code took effect on 14 September 2026; it has no percentage trigger for upgrading a whole roof, requires a tear-off to the deck when the old roof is water soaked or deteriorated, is slate or tile, or already has two or more layers, and Oklahoma’s amendment adds that new asphalt shingles may not be laid over existing asphalt shingles.
Oklahoma’s claim and contract rules are unusually specific. On an insurance-funded job you may cancel within 72 hours of written notice that all or part of the claim was denied, and a roofer may not advertise or promise to pay your deductible; it must give you written notice of that rule with its first estimate. Every roofer registers each year with the Construction Industries Board, at $75, with at least $500,000 of liability insurance for residential work. From 1 January 2027 residential roofers need an exam-based endorsement, every job needs a written contract, and unregistered or unendorsed roofing carries fines of up to $5,000 per violation. Door-to-door sellers need a Lawton city permit and badge.
Lopez & Sons Roofing, the only ranked firm, does residential shingle roofing, siding, seamless gutters, fascia and soffit, and publishes Lawton and Elgin service pages; it is based about 40 miles away with 14 GAF reviews. For commercial work, four of the registered Lawton firms listed on this page, including Lockwood and Sons Construction, Brox Industries and Salazar Roofing & Construction, hold the exam-based commercial endorsement. Keystone Roofing lists Comanche and Cotton counties as its service area. Those firms are not scored and we are not recommending them.

What 4.0 inch hail does to a Lawton roof
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 2 counties of the Lawton, OK statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 219 hail reports, 175 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 15 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $882,000; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Lawton in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 June 2023 | 4.0 in | Lawton | Comanche |
| 29 April 2016 | 4.0 in | Mt Scott | Comanche |
| 22 May 2025 | 3.5 in | Randlett | Cotton |
| 15 June 2023 | 3.0 in | Comanche | Comanche |
| 21 April 2020 | 3.0 in | Elgin | Comanche |
| 21 October 2017 | 3.0 in | Indiahoma | Comanche |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 15 June 2023 near Lawton, measured at 4.0 inches. That is grapefruit sized. Stones that big destroy asphalt shingles outright, dent metal, crack tile and routinely total roofs across whole neighbourhoods.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 90 knots, about 104 mph, near Lawton on 15 June 2023. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
Tornadoes. 15 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Geronimo on 18 May 2019.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 15 June 2023 event near Lawton, reproduced verbatim:
A wind gust of 103 mph was measured by a spotter just southeast of the intersection of Sheridan Road and Lee Blvd. Numerous power poles and trees were damaged near this intersection.
That is what the specification has to anticipate here, written up by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in May (108), April (90), June (88). The worst years on record were 2023 (76), 2020 (60), 2024 (49). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Lawton, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Lawton sees enough damaging hail that a Class 4 impact-rated shingle is worth pricing, though not automatically worth buying. Get both quotes and weigh the premium against any insurance discount.
15 June 2023: four-inch hail and a 103 mph gust inside Lawton
On the afternoon of 15 June 2023 an anomalously strong mid-June disturbance set off supercells across western and southern Oklahoma. At about 3:35 p.m. a 4-inch hailstone fell in Lawton. Six minutes later a spotter measured a 103 mph gust just south-east of Sheridan Road and Lee Boulevard, where power poles and trees came down, and thunderstorm wind blew the outer layer of roof decking off a two-storey apartment building.
Comanche and Cotton counties logged 30 reports that afternoon: 19 of hail, including 2.5 to 3 inches at Fort Sill and 2.75 inches in Lawton, eight of damaging wind and two tornadoes. In Cotton County the Walters Mesonet station recorded an 80 mph gust, a house near Walters lost its roof, and EF0 tornadoes damaged shingles and barns.
None of the Lawton hail rows from that afternoon carries a NOAA damage estimate, so the metro’s recorded $882,000 for the decade reflects almost none of the storm’s roof losses. 2023 was the busiest hail year of the decade, with 49 reports; three days before the Lawton storm, 2.5-inch hail hit Elgin and Fletcher.
Four-inch hail is not a one-off here. On 29 April 2016 a 4-inch stone was photographed near Mount Scott as an EF1 near Elgin damaged mobile homes, and in May 2025 a 3.5-inch stone fell near Randlett in Cotton County. With nearly two-thirds of Lawton’s homes built before 1980, many roofs here are on their second or third replacement.
After hail, the checks are simple: confirm the roofer’s registration is in good standing on the Construction Industries Board search, that it will put its deductible notice in writing, and that any door-to-door seller has a city badge. From 2027, ask whether it holds the new residential endorsement.

What to verify before a Lawton contractor starts
Licensing is required in OK. Oklahoma requires every roofing contractor to register annually with the Construction Industries Board under the Roofing Contractor Registration Act, 59 O.S. 1151.1 and following, at $75 a year. The Act bars a roofer from advertising or promising to pay any part of your insurance deductible, and every roofer must give written notice of that rule with its initial estimate.
Registration requires liability insurance of at least $500,000 for residential work or $1,000,000 for commercial work, with the Board named as certificate holder; there is no surety bond. You may cancel an insurance-funded roofing contract within 72 hours of written notice that your claim was denied in whole or in part, with payments refunded within 10 days. From 1 January 2027 every residential roofer must also hold a residential roofing endorsement earned by passing an exam at 70 percent; firms already registered have until 1 January 2028 to pass it or complete 10 extra hours of continuing education.
Check here: Oklahoma Construction Industries Board roofing registration. Until 2027 the registration tests nothing, so check the insurance certificate directly with the insurer, and from 2027 ask to see the residential roofing endorsement as well as the registration.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.
The shape of the Lawton contractor market
1 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Lawton, OK statistical area, of which 0 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 14 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.9. How these Lawton rankings were produced
Every contractor in the Lawton, OK pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 1 certified contractor, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 0 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.9. The top one were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. The findings are printed above whether they flatter the contractor or not, and nobody paid to appear.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Last updated: October 2026. Scoring run: 2026-10-12. Corrections go to the editor and are actioned on verification.
