A roof gable vent is a vent set into the triangular gable end wall of a house, near the peak, that lets attic air move in and out. Gable vents are wind driven: air enters the vent on the windward side of the roof and pushes hot, stale air out the vent on the opposite gable. They act as passive intake and exhaust at the same time, which makes them simple to install, but it is also why a gable vent can fight a ridge vent for the same air.
What is a roof gable vent?
A gable vent is a louvered opening mounted high in the vertical gable wall, the flat triangular section of siding under the two roof slopes of a gable roof. It vents the attic behind the wall rather than the roof deck itself. Because it sits on a vertical surface protected by the roof overhang, it stays drier than a roof mounted vent and rarely leaks.
Most gable vents are rectangular, square, round, or a triangle shaped to follow the roofline. Behind the visible louvers sits an insect screen and, on functional units, an open path straight into the attic. Decorative gable vents look the same from the street but are backed by solid board, so they move no air.
How does a gable vent work?
A gable vent works on wind pressure, not the stack effect that drives ridge and soffit systems. When wind hits the gable wall, it forces outside air in through that vent, raises the pressure inside the attic, and pushes warm air out the vent on the far gable. Which vent is intake and which is exhaust flips with the wind direction.
This cross flow cools the attic well when the wind blows across the gables. When the wind runs parallel to the ridge, or the air is still, a gable pair moves very little air. That variability is the core weakness: performance depends on the weather, not on a steady rise of heat like a balanced roof ventilation system delivers.
Types of gable vents
Gable vents fall into three groups: static louvered vents, powered gable fans, and decorative closed units. The table below sets out what each does and where it fits.

Static vents come in aluminum, vinyl, and wood. Powered gable fans mount behind an existing gable opening, which is why they are often the least invasive way to add forced ventilation: no shingles are cut and no roof penetration is made.
What size gable vent do you need? Net free area and the 1/300 rule
Size a gable vent by net free area (NFA), the actual open square inches after the louvers and insect screen block part of the opening. Screened, louvered vents typically deliver about 60% of their gross opening as usable NFA, so manufacturers publish the NFA rating you should design around, not the frame size.
The 2015 IRC (section R806.1) sets the target: total net free ventilating area must be at least 1/300 of the attic floor area when intake and exhaust are balanced, or 1/150 when they are not. Split the total roughly 50/50 between low intake and high exhaust, with the upper vents at least 3 feet above the eaves.
Worked example for a 1,500 square foot attic:
- Divide attic area by 300: 1,500 / 300 = 5 square feet of total NFA, which is 720 square inches.
- Split 50/50: about 360 square inches of intake and 360 square inches of exhaust.
- If gable vents are the only exhaust, they must supply that full 360 square inches of NFA between both ends.
Common gable vent NFA ratings run about 26 square inches for an 18 inch round unit and roughly 50 square inches for a 22 inch unit, so hitting 360 square inches often takes large triangular or rectangular vents. This math is the usual reason gable only ventilation falls short on bigger attics.
Gable vent vs ridge vent
A gable vent exhausts through the end wall on wind pressure; a ridge vent exhausts along the roof peak on rising heat. Ridge vents move air more consistently and spread exhaust evenly across the whole roof, which is why they pair cleanly with soffit vents at the eaves.

On a simple gable roof with good soffit intake, a correctly sized gable pair can ventilate the attic. Should you seal gable vents if you have a ridge vent?
In most cases yes: if you add a ridge vent with soffit intake, seal the gable vents. Running both at once short circuits the system. A ridge vent sitting a few feet from an open gable pulls its make up air from that nearby gable opening instead of drawing fresh air up from the soffits, so the lower attic and the intended intake path get bypassed.
There is a second problem. When wind blows parallel to the ridge, an open gable vent can reverse the airflow through the ridge vent and drive rain or snow into the attic. Use this decision path:
- Gable vents plus soffit vents, no other roof exhaust: keep the gable vents as the exhaust and confirm total NFA meets the 1/300 target.
- Adding a ridge vent with soffit intake: seal the gable vents from inside the attic with rigid foam board or plywood and seal the edges. Ridge plus soffit is the balanced pair.
- Installing a powered gable fan: give it dedicated intake through the soffits and keep any ridge vent sealed, or the fan pulls air straight from the ridge and starves the rest of the attic.
- Hip roof or complex roof: gable vents alone leave dead zones, so move to a soffit to ridge system or add forced exhaust.

Powered gable vent fans: CFM sizing and cost
A powered gable fan mounts behind a gable opening and forces attic air out with an electric or solar motor. Size it by airflow in cubic feet per minute (CFM), using roughly 0.7 to 1.0 CFM per square foot of attic floor when soffit intake is adequate. Undersized intake chokes the fan; oversized fans without intake pull conditioned air from the house below.

Do gable vents work with a ridge vent?
Not well together. An open gable vent near a ridge vent supplies the ridge with make up air, so the ridge stops pulling from the soffits and the lower attic goes under ventilated. Should I cover my gable vents?
Cover or seal gable vents only when they compete with a ridge vent or a powered fan.
