Best Roofers by Metro: Certified Contractors Scored in 400 US Markets

Short answer: The Roofing Brief scores manufacturer-certified roofing contractors in the 400 largest U.S. metropolitan and micropolitan areas on a single published formula, then researches the top five in each metro individually. 230 metro rankings are live so far, covering 272,568,928 people. No contractor pays to be listed.

What this index is

Every “best roofers” page on the internet is one of three things: a directory selling placement, a review aggregator where nine reviews can outrank nine hundred, or an affiliate listicle paid per lead. This index is built differently. Contractors enter the scoring pool only by holding a verifiable manufacturer certification. They are then scored on a formula published in full on every page, using a Bayesian adjustment so that rating volume counts. The top five in each metro are then checked by hand against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registries and independent review platforms, and the unflattering findings get printed alongside the flattering ones.

The geography

The 400 areas are the 387 Metropolitan Statistical Areas defined by the U.S. Census Bureau plus the 13 largest Micropolitan Statistical Areas, ranked by 2024 population. Together they contain 296,046,522 people, about 87% of the United States population, across 1,214 counties.

Each metro page also carries a decade of roof-damaging weather for that specific area. The Roofing Brief mapped every county in all 400 areas to the NOAA Storm Events Database and counted hail and severe wind reports from 2016 through 2025, 30,337 damaging-hail reports in total. That is why the advice on a Dallas page differs from the advice on a Miami page: Dallas is a hail problem, Miami is a wind problem, and the right roof specification is not the same.

The scoring formula

Identical in every metro, and fixed before any contractor is scored.

What we do not claim

1. This is a ranking of certified contractors, not of all contractors. The scoring pool is drawn from the GAF certification registry, the largest publicly queryable roofing certification list in North America. The Owens Corning, CertainTeed and IKO registries cannot be queried in bulk, so a roofer certified only by one of those will not enter the pool, though the individual research pass does record those certifications where a ranked company holds them. An excellent uncertified roofer will not appear here.
2. Certification is a floor, not a guarantee. It evidences training, insurance and standing with a manufacturer. It does not guarantee the outcome of any individual job.
3. Highest-scoring is not the same as best for you. Proximity, roof type and scheduling all matter. Get three written quotes.

How to use these pages

Read the ranking, then do the three checks every page repeats: verify the certification at the manufacturer rather than trusting a badge image, get the certificate of insurance from the insurer rather than the contractor, and confirm the contractor pulls the permit rather than asking you to. If you want the general version of that process, read our guide to finding and vetting a roofing contractor.

Corrections

These pages describe real businesses using public records. If you are a contractor named here and something is inaccurate or out of date, contact the editor and it will be corrected on verification. Placement cannot be bought, and it cannot be bought off.
